Linux @ 1920x1200

I've read thru all the reviews, but i just can't seem to pull the trigger on a 4870x2. the low end FPS of the card just seems to fail at certain points compared to the 280. driver issues? how likely are these to be fixed before its time to buy a new card? (3 years for me)

anyone have links to a linux review of these cards? all i saw was a 4850 vs 9800GTX review, and on linux, the 9800 beat the 4950.

help me pull the trigger and buy a card, i'm tired of sitting around futzing.

damn, i'w not sure i can trust [H] anymore... did NOBODY know about wine not working with ATI drivers from 8.6 to 8.8?! so if i got the 4870, i wouldnt even be able to play 95% of the things i want? whoa.

i'm not sure i can wait till that is fixed.

If you've been using Linux and didn't know that... wow. Sorry, I don't even use Linux and I know that.
Which is why I'd say go Nvidia, and why are you getting such a high end GPU? Most games don't work in Linux..

Plus most gamers are on Windows, not Linux...plus not all games run native under Linux....plus as stated above, ATi and OpenGL has been no public secret?

another reason to go with the GTX280. or run a dual boot system. just because vista will not allow you to install video cards with different drivers does not mean you can't have one for one system and another for the second OS. It may not be worth it though with a GTX280 available for 350 if you look hard enough

Clearly you don't use Linux- ATI drivers have worked, and continue to work quite well. I don't game but I do use Compiz and other applications- the only problem I ever had is with the NVIDIA drivers and a Westinghouse monitor and that's the monitor's fault. fI've used both NVIDIA and ATI proprietary and open source drivers and each have their pluses and minues- same as Windows drivers.

I didn't see him reference games either. Not sure what he wants such a high level GPU for either but he must have his reasons.

Nothing is broken... I am using wine+comiz/metacity+cat 8.8s with zero problems. Worked with the 8.7 drivers too on my 4850. Make sure you are using the latest version of wine and Xorg.

In the past, this was true, but not anymore. Since you don't use Linux, please don't provide advice on shit you know nothing about. ATI HAS VERY GOOD LINUX DRIVERS. In many respects, the ATI drivers are now superior to the Nvidia drivers. There are also several linux games that could use the power, such as Quake Wars (UT3 should be coming soon). He could also be dual booting and game in windows, but use linux primarily.

@OP: It depends on what you want to do. NVidia has better gaming performance in Linux, but ATI has superior 2D/drawing performance. You really can't go wrong with either the 4870X2 or GTX 280, but more info would certainly help (specs, usage, etc...)

i do game, which is why i was surprised at the wine/ati thing. i dont want to dual boot, im done with windows on my home computer, but i also am a programmer and ive been itching to try out GPGPU. i ended up getting a BFGTech mildly OC'd 280 for $385, instead of the $505 ewiz.com 4870x2, which means the other money went into a DD waterblock for the card.

as soon as the waterblock comes in i'll be putting it on, but for now im just staring at the beast.

As an example- I just installed an HD4850 in my Linux machine which I purchased primarily, well actually totally, because I couldn't run compiz with my westinghouse 37w3 and my 8800GT. It's not just me- there are posts aplenty about this combo. Anyway, popped the ATI card in and BINGO! everything works perfectly out of the box. Compiz whirls and twirls- the text is razor sharp, shadows and tints fade to perfectly and no dorking around trying to get it working required. I couldn't be happier. In this case anyway, ATI supports for Linux is not only great, but superior to NVIDIAs.
