Are they all junk?!

i moved into an apartment about a month ago.

I bought a linksys wireless router and it worked fine for about a week.

It then started kicking me off the network and I would have to unplug the router and plug it back in.

So, i bought another one and it's been almost 3 weeks now and its starting to do it again!!!

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE THINGS!!!
 
lol well come down first of all,

ok now did you enable wireless security or is it just open to anyone? you culd have people leaching off your router and downloading tons of stuff
 
NO, it's open to the public.....but where i live....i don't need to worry.

It says the only person connected (that never got premission) is "danny" which is the girl that lives across the road.
 
ok do you guys download stuff throught bittorrent?

also check the DHCp clients table to see how many people are connected
 
right now.....just my laptop is connected and its working fine.

Maybe Dainielle is getting crazy with my bandwidth.

I'll secure it for now and see if that helps.

No..I have hundreds of them out in use.

What model do you have, including the version.

Are you running default settings? If so...it's probably causing issues. You stated you live in an apartment complex. I wonder how many other wireless networks there are. I wonder how many other wireless networks are also using Linksys routers...same default SSID, same channels, etc. Wireless networks on default settings are usually not good neighbors...end up causing conflicts. Identicle SSIDs, same channels, etc. Not good.

What is the rest of the apartment network like? Is it also on the same IP range as defaults for Linksys? Guessing not...else it'd not work in the first place...however....depending on what hardware they're using..if you NAT yourself..and they have a setup that doesn't forward DNS very well..that can cause issues.

Neighbor using cordless phones? Neighbor using microwave a lot?
 
Also drop into command and do a netstat to check if you are infected with a mass mailing worm, that can knock out a consumer router in a matter of minutes. I have about 10 WRT54G/S deployed each having 4-5 hard wired clients (i.e. down level switches present) and prob about 5-20 wireless at any one time per router and having no issues at all.
 
i had a linksys wired router about a year ago and it worked perfectly.

i just bought the wrt54g yesterday and so far.....its good. setup was extremely easy. day 2 brings me no problems so far.
its wireless but im using the wired function and disabling wireless. works great

No, but then again they arn't godly as some would like to think. Ive used a few, friends use em... they work great and I havent had issues with them. As long as your not hooking it up to some 30 meg FIOS connection and maxing out your bandwidth with torrent traffic... there shouldnt be a problem.

"Fool me once... shame on you, fool me twice... " :p Which linksys router is it, and what are you using it with (what connection), and how are you using it (torrents?). Ive read the newer version of the WAP54g wasnt much to get excited about as far as ram goes.

And what do you mean by kicking off the network? Does all traffic just die to one computer, to all computers? Can you ping anything outside of the router?
 
sorry for being off topic, but how does maxing the bw (eg using torrents) kill the router? i suspected this was happening to my (now dead) gigabyte crap, but now it seems it's happening on my friend's asus one. my friend doesn't use bittorrent but i left the wireless unsecured and the router would die. pcs couldn't get an ip from it and i would have to unplug it from the mains to reset it. it's been a few days since i secured the wireless and so far so good.

Ive never really gotten into the torrenting stuff, but I was trying it out over LAN. As far as downloading movies/music etc... You can have several hundred connections for just one file you are downloading. Im not sure if the CPU on the router cant handle that many connections, if it runs out of ram... or a combination of the two.

But if you were doing enough torrenting to max out any decent dsl/cable, there would be hundreds of connections at least.
 
I had this problem with torrents with my wrt54G. It turns out the default timeouts for connections are on the order of days, so eventually it would get clogged up and need a reboot. Using third party firmware and custom settings fixed the problem. I used hyperWRT but there is also DDWRT, among others, I think.

I doubt it kills the router...P2P traffic does bog them down there...requiring a power cycle. Most homegrade routers are light in RAM, and not very strong as far as their CPU. The high amount of concurrent connection P2P traffic brings to them...overwhelms them. That RAM has to keep track of each and every TCP connection.

P2P traffic also introduces insane amounts of ad/spyware/malware/trojans to peoples PCs...so now....network issues SHOULD be expected.

Another popular "vandalism" like trend that I've read about and actually seen once...people who leave their wireless routers unsecured, with a default web admin password...are subject to intentional vandalism by retards who log in..and upload a bad firmware file...with the intention of screwing up the router.
