Im thinking of buying one locally(but only if its version 4 or under)

How can I tell what version is it ?
will it say "version x.x" on the box?

Also, does anyone know of any stores that still carry version 4 or under? BestBuy? CompUSA? OfficeDepot? OfficeMax? Fry's? etc...

Just get the WRT54GL, notice the "L", after linksys changed to the VxWorks OS on the WRT54xxx platform, they realeased this version of the router that still runs Linux as the WRT54G v4 and below did.

WRT54G
CDF0 = WRT54G v1.0 / ADM6996L Chipset / CPU 125Mhz
CDF1 = WRT54G v1.0 / ADM6996L Chipset / CPU 125Mhz
CDF2 = WRT54G v1.1 / ADM6996L Chipset / CPU 125Mhz
CDF3 = WRT54G v1.1 / ADM6996L Chipset / CPU 125Mhz
CDF5 = WRT54G v2.0 / ADM6996L Chipset / CPU 200Mhz
CDF7 = WRT54G v2.2 / BCM5325EKQM Chipset / CPU 200Mhz
CDF8 = WRT54G v3.0 / BCM5325EKQM Chipset / CPU 200Mhz
CDF9 = WRT54G v3.1 / BCM5325EKQM Chipset / CPU 200Mhz
CDFA = WRT54G v4.0 / BCM5352E Chipset / CPU 200Mhz
CDFB = WRT54G v5.0 / BCM5352EKPB Chipset / CPU 200Mhz

Agreed, save yourself the trouble. I recently tried
Best Buy
Circuit City
CompUSA
Staples
OfficeMax

None had anything but version 5. I ended up buying an WRT54GL from CDW, but they have to special order them. No one carries the GL in stock it seems. The other thing to try is to get one on Ebay, but by the time you ask every person selling one what the serial is you might as well just get the GL online somewhere.

they dont make the wrt54gl anymore

Look for people possibly selling paperweight WRT54G routers. They're incredibly easy to bring back from the dead and can be bought for near nothing.

I snagged a v1.1 from a local thrift store for $5. Wouldn't boot right, but I was able to reflash it to DD-WRT just fine :cool:

The OP could try a WTB in the FS/FT forum and see if he has any takers.

Is the WRT54G that is bundled with the wireless notebook card an older version?

EDIT: NM it seems to be a diffrent router in the bundle. :eek:
