Right now I have a linksys wireless B solution and the issue is that there is a large quantity of packet loss. If I upgraded from my BEFW11S4 to the WAP54A and corresponding access point, would I see all of this packet loss go away? Is the wireless A worth the cost over the wireless B?

Well, It really depends on why you are dropping packets. Chnaging to 802.11A will change the frequency that it operates on: 802.11a = 5Ghz range and 802.11b = 2.4Ghz range. The 2.4Ghz range is MUCH more crowded.

As a test, I'd suggest trying to change the Wifi channel that your AP is on now. Otherwise: .11a is MUCH faster, BUT also doesn't have the range that .11b or .11g do.

Assuming you have good signal strength - If you look in the manual or pdf file for the AP, there's a few settings that you can muddle with to help prevent packet loss. And wirelessA stuff is getting difficult to find. wirelessG is the next step up.

Look into RTS Threshold and Fragmentation Length settings.

interesting, are you saying Wireless A doesn't have the penetration strength of B or that it just doesn't have the overall range?

Zeke, I'm saying both ;)

The lower penetration is a function of the higher frequency (5Ghz band).

And the Range issue is attributed to the frequency as well, but not as you might think. It takes more power to broadcast the same signal strength in the 5Ghz band than it does in the 2.4Ghz band. And if BOTH .11a and .11b are limited to the same total output, then I'm sure you see where this is going...

Make sense?
