Hey guys!

the hardware in question: linksys WRT54G v6(with latest firewire update 1.0.0.9) router. and I use a macbook which works fine with other wireless networks. And I have a att dsl connection with speedster modem.

this is my second router after the first one had the same problem.

The problem: Router works fine for first few days. one fine day, the router just stops respondin(wired/wireless), but works as normal after a reboot. But the frequecies of reboot continues and increases.... but at times, i get a long working time. And at any given time I have arnd 10 networks in my area.

What is the problem? did I get the faulty hardware two times? or some problem at my end?

any help dudes..?

thanx

This was a very common problem with SOHO routers of all make a few years ago but has decreased in frequency as time went on and quality continued to increase. After X amount of time, Y router would start intermittently freezing up and requiring reboots in order for it to stay connected. Some argue it's a heat issue, some say it's just a quality problem, some say it's a hardware time bomb... /shrug... the end result is the same.

Try updating or re-flashing your firmware to see if that fixes the issue, though to be honest I doubt it will. You could even try back-flashing, or putting it back to an older firmware. If your 54G was version 5 or lower, I'd say go grab DD-WRT... but, as far as I know, version 6 is no-go and even version 5 was iffy.

The WRT54G (pre version 5) was a great router with a lot of possibilities and enjoyed a very long life but all good things must come to their end and so the WRT54G/GL/etc. line must fade. There are a lot of good replacements out there for you to look at, namely the ones in this list: :)

have you changed channels so that you are on your own? I've head that two routers can have problems if they are on the same channel.

Shouldn't kill his wired side though.

that doesnt work too....any good alternative to this router in the same price range?

Hmm, I've still got my WRT54G that I got about 2 and a half years ago, not sure what version I think its hardware version 3, and it hasnt given me any problems at all, and its running the linksys firmware. Maybe see if you can find a earlier hardware version on ebay or something?
