Hey guys,

I tried everything to get this to work and it must be something stupid that I am doing wrong. I want to be able to VPN from outside my home network, into my network with my existing wireless router. The router is a cisco linksys E3000 which support VPN passthrough. All 3 major protocols are enabled however I cannot get this to work. I tried to port forward the PPTP as well as IPsec but still wont work. Can someone, step by step, instruct me on how to get this to work?

Also, I have a Cisco VPN client from that I would like to use. I believe it only supports IPsec so I would like to use that protocol if possible. Any help would be apprecaited. I am attempting to test this via my iPHONE built in VPN.

Thanks

The forwarding must be configured on the network you want to connect to,if the pptp is a server or appliance. If the remote router is a all-in one firewall and vpn server, no forwarding is needed. On your side, only pptp passthrouh must be configured

Here is a general tutorial on how PPTP works.

You will have to give us more information on what you are trying to do, OS, hardware, servers, et etc etc

I am trying to simply access a local LAN side NAS device over VPN. So basically whenever I can get a internet connection, I can simply VPN into my home and access this NAS. RCN cable internet....ties into Linksys/cisco E3000. I tried to open up PPTP however on the client side I am unsure on how to set it up. The client I was using for testing was the iPHONE built in VPN service. The operating system is Windows 7 on both laptops

The E3000, does it have dd-wrt firmware on it ? Or are you using Linksys firmware ?

You can setup a PPTP server with dd-wrt in no time. Here is a how to :

http://www.howtogeek.com/51772/how-to-setup-a-vpn-server-using-a-dd-wrt-router/

If you dont have dd-wrt as a firmware, you will have to configure a computer in you network to act as a PPTP server and forward the ports to your pptp server with your linksys e3000.

When the server is configured on your home network, you can use the iphone vpn service, or any laptop, computer outside of your network to point it to your home public IP and you will be able to connect to the VPN server and access your NAS.

So you need a guide like this? http://www.hideipvpn.com/2009/09/howto-windows-7-pptp-vpn-setup-tutorial/

I'm guessing the VPN server is already set up on the router or NAS device so you're just trying to configure each device?

I guess I should have been more specefic. There is only one device at home, the NAS device, no other devices could be used as a PPTP server. My router does not support full VPN only passthrough. I was trying to avoid having to buy a full fledged VPN router and just make the passthrough work for what I need it to do. The linksys router is not running ddwrt, its running linksys firmware.

I am not even sure, havent checked yet, if the Netgear Ready Nas Duov2 can act as a PPTP server. If not, then I guess what I want to do will not work without a full fledged VPN endpoint.

For the E3000, you can change the firmare to DD-WRT and it will be able to act as a PPTP server (If i understand correctly, its your router ?) . It will save you money and will suit your needs. It offers also, more recent VPN servers.

PPTP passthrough is used on the client network, (more or less, i dont want to explain it all) but keep in mind that passthrough helps to make a connection to the PPTP server, the protocol is quite old and need a little help from modern router to be usable on ''modern'' networks.

If you like to read on the matter, there is a basic explanation :

Thanks for the responses guys. As mentioned earlier, I dont have another device to run the PPTP server on so it looks like I will need to get a router that has a full VPN feature set. I really dont want to change the firmware to dd-wrt as I dont have any experience with that.

It's just the software that enables it. No need buying another router for the same thing you'll get in DD-WRT but with a prettier interface. Isn't nearly as difficult to navigate or install DD-WRT as you think and the amount of tutorials over the past 8 years is ridiculous.
