seems like my connection keeps dropping and coming back after a few minutes. i have 4 things on the network and theyre all wired. anyone know why thi router does this? its getting annoying when im trying to play socom3 or something..

do you guys suggest another good wired router with good plug and play functions like the linksy

That's a rather common problem with the older generation of SOHO routers in general, particularly those from Linksys and Netgear. Replacing the router should solve your problem.

As requested:

Best:
D-Link DGL-4300 -- $124.99 (Wireless)

D-Link DGL-4100 -- $109.99 (Wired Only)

Netgear WPNT834 RangeMax 240 -- $129.99

LINKSYS WRT54GX4 -- $129.99

Better
BELKIN F5D8230-4 -- $83.99

NETGEAR WPN824 -- $99.99

Good
BELKIN F5D9230-4 -- $49.99

Hope that helps.

I saw the WIRED part...

No offense intended, but it's rather silly to purchase a wired only router these days. Many SOHO manufacturers have all but stopped making them and reserved the better technology (faster processors, better switch components, etc) for the wireless ones. The exception to that is the DGL-4100, which is wired only... but you don't like the price point. :)

Also, that list is compiled from the recommendations on this board. You may find a few that arent' on there, like the RV082, but not many. Most wireless routers will allow you to turn off the wireless ap if you don't want it.

oh wait
NICE..sorry guys didnt realize that the wireless ones allow wires also. im probably going ot use th ewireless feature for only 1 computer. the problem is..how do you config it so that others dont have access..i know you can set a pw but my gf's lynksys is a pain and always locks up or dies

i am just looking for a router to be able to get the full potential of my bandwidth that i am paying for

may get this

Quick and dirty way is to enable MAC filtering and turn on WPA or WPA2, if the router supports it. MAC filtering is generally viewed as useless but it'll keep the 'roadwarrior' types away from your ap at least. WPA or WPA2 will keep most of the rest away, leaving only the determined who could still get in.

Then you don't want to get that. The WRT54GL is only a re-hashed version of the WRT54G V4 - same slower processor, etc. You'd be better off with the $83 belkin pre-n from the list if you can swing the few extra bucks.

The $49 Belkin is G/MIMO, which is still a better wireless technology than the WRT54GL, though it may be having some firmware issues at the moment.

That Netgear WNR834M -(Xyphox)- is linking to does look very cool. I hope it becomes available at more places and someone does a full review on it soon!

Just because something is new or promises great performance does not mean it makes it into my list. :) When it's tried and true or at least been tested and is commercially available... I'll recommend it. YMMV. :)

I agree, that's why I said "I hope it becomes available at more places and someone does a full review on it soon!" ;) But it does look good on paper for now.

If you want a router with a lot of features, consider throwing a pair of nics in an older box (P3 or even P2 era), and installing one of the Linux firewall distros (Ipcop, Monowall, smoothwall, Clarkconnect) on it. Then just plug it into a switch that has the rest of your network on it.

oh your right, i dident notice the model number's that close :p

Hopefully the gigabit edition will make it into recommendations before long -- it's nice to take advantage of GbE where you can.

There's a recent firmware out, which doesn't have such an embarrassing list of outstanding issues as some previous ones did.

E.g. the following were still outstanding in the firmware after the initial release (but are no longer outstanding):

# SPI firewall does not work.
# WEP, WPA and WPA2 do not work under certain circumstances.

http://kbserver.netgear.com/release_notes/d102892.asp

Here're the current release notes:

what the hell, why would you buy a router so dicked up?

Known Issues

  1. Light status is not corrrect in various situations.
  2. Port triggering does not work under certain circumstances.
  3. SPI firewall does not work.
  4. WEP, WPA and WPA2 do not work under certain circumstances.
  5. Some values that you change are not reported correctly.
  6. UPnP settings cannot be changed.
  7. MTU handling does not work.
  8. Various issues with site blocking.
  9. Remote management does not work.

Do that not test or what.
