Howdy [H]!

So I have a line in cable that I can connect from my guitar amp to my motherboard's line in. Unfortunately, a friend of mine told me this can damage the motherboard. Is this true? I have an Intel Z68 currently. If so, I was thinking of investing in a cheapo sound card to record from. Any recommendations? I've seen some $30ish ones at Best Buy, but, I know better than to buy something off the shelves at Best Buy without asking the knowledgeable people on the internet first.

Another question - is there any sort of software that can force programs to use a certain sound output? I'd like for music and such to come through my monitor's speakers, but, Spotify doesn't seem to have an option to pick an output device. :S It'd also be nice if I could occasionally switch Firefox or WMP/VLC to use the sound output of my monitor if I want to show someone a video or something of that sort. I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. Edit: Can Virtual Audio Cable do this?
Edit2: Figured this one out, I guess. IndieVolume does it. Still not sure about a sound card though.
