120mm fan on side of the case, run a 120mm to 90mm down pipe so it goes over the cpu fan from the 120mm??

e.g

120 mm Fan >>> Piping >>> Cpu heatsink/fan

The case is about 1" from my disk and i can't move it at all so would it be pointless?
 
So basiclly you are placing a 120mm to draw in outside air, then funneling that down directly to the top of your CPU fan, correct?

This will help very much. Even with a 1" gap you will still be drawing in cooler air, plus the air moving will help cool it. If you do it right, you should see an descent decrease in temp.

I did this on a friends system, I used a 120mm Tornado he had, and used a coated PVC pipe to direct the air directly onto the CPU fan. I then attached the 120mm fan to a baybus thingy, so he could control it. I think he later attached it to a thermistor type controlloer for automatic control. I haven't spoken with him in a while, so not really sure what he has done, but it worked fairly well. And it was kept inside the desk, but he was adjusted to the noise of the fan, always wore headphones, everyone else hated the noise.
