I was interested in this new technology and decided to get a Lightscribe drive. For those of you that don't know what "Lightscribe" is, it's a drive that allows you to print silkscreen like images directly on a Lighscribe compatible disk directly from the drive. You can print images or text or both. The software that came with it is from Nero. They gave me the entire Nero suite and I must say that it's kick ass. One problem though, seem the lightscribe software is a little confusing for I am still trying to figure out how to get this drive to print. I'll figure it out though. Once I do I'll post a picture of a printed disk.

Heh, how much is the media and how long does it take to "Lightscribe?"

I heard 20 mins for the pictures, but I havent heard about media prices. Please correct me, and enlighten me :)

a few weeks ago i tried to find lightscribe media with no luck.

this is the first time i seen how well it works, im impressed.

is that a dw1625? mine looks completely different, it is still black but the door and part of the lower panel are shiny instead of matt finish and the button is much smaller.

It is SO MUCH quieter than the Lite on CD burner i had before.
The buffer indicator thingy on nero does not drop below the last bar even when i am playing bf1942.
lightscribe takes a long time. and for best results you should do 2 passes. then the black is almost really black.
Neros lightscribe labeling program is very straightforward.
It only burns CDs at 40x (6000) with 52x media
but burns DVDs at 8x (which is 11000 or so) with 8x media wtf with that?

the only bogus thing (which was PEBKAC error) was that to use the nero lightscribe i had to install the OEM nero"express" which overwrote my real nero. now i find out i could have downloaded a free update..duh.

Do you guys have to the take the disk out and flip it to lightscribe or is there another laser that does it from the top?

it uses the same laser i believe. so you have to flip it. its such a chore!

btw i just tested printing a simple ring of text instead of an image background. it only took 2 and a bit minutes. that is fine for me, it takes about the same amount of time as burning a cd.
that is fast enough for me, i dont burn that many. but for someone who does a LOT of burning then the old sharpie will still be the way to go.

Yours is retail.. his is OEM.

retardo that one took the full 1/2 hour because i used the highest quality graphics setting. when you see it in person it is definately worth it for "special" cds. i would just buy some regular CDs for everyday purpose though. lightscrbe ones are more expensive.

I'm going to order a lightscribe CD burner for a work project today. Thanks for the pics and info. The CD labels will only need text and maybe a small logo. I'm going for speed vs quality of the label.

Any suggestions on brand? BenQ, HP or Lacie?

I just missed a sale on the BenQ yesterday. Here are the drives available at Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...&Category=0&minPrice=&maxPrice=&Go.x=0&Go.y=0

Who else makes similar CD label writers? I thought Yamaha had "Tatu" or something like that but Newegg doesn't carry Yamaha.

And Heat/Defex - the BenQ DW1625 (OEM) is the same price as the HP model (retail) when you take shipping into account. HP has its own lightscribe software and BenQ has Nero. I have the full version of Nero myself already. Is lighscribe in there or is it a free download? I'd prefer the HP model just because it comes with a blank CD to test it on.

There are only two true manufacturers right now: BenQ and Lite-On. HP uses BenQ drives in their retail kits and Lite-On's in their computers. Since HP has an exclusive deal with Lite-On, I'm guessing the LaCie is a BenQ as well.

Yamaha has (or had) DiscT@2. It wrote to the bottom of the disc though.

LightScribe is included with the full version of Nero. You will probably need to download the latest version if you haven't already.
