I was about 45 miles from my house...had no clue it was storming at my house.
So i get home...and get on my computer normally, and i see my start button changed colors, then i investigate further moving things around on the screen, and it's the bottom left and top right of the screen that looks as if a magnent were held up to it...and then the entire screen looks a tad bit "washed out"....so yea if that weren't enough to piss me off....

I go to get online....and internet doesn't work...long story short...ports 2 and 3 are dead on the router, can't use port 1 cuz it's shared with uplink, so only one working port to use and 2 computers need to be hooked up....

I was planning on getting a new monitor anyways, but still sucks till i actually get one.
now to pick up a cheap switch some place.

*everything on my computer is hooked up to surge protectors....which i don't trust at all..but i guess it's better than no protection.
 
dude that sucks, some surge protectors come with guarantees though, check online. It might take some work, but maybe you can be reimbursed.
 
Good luck trying to get anything from any guarantee from a surge protector, especially if it's some generic company.

Luckily I've never had lightning fry anything except a cheap modem. I'm not really sure what effect it would have on a monitor, but if the colors just look washed out then you might have some luck just degaussing it several times.
 
meh i'm just gonna go buy a cheap $15 router..and i was planning on replacing my old 15inch anywho...so no big harm was done....only thing i'm worried about is my computer and the logitech z680 surround..everything else can be replaced cheap...now wonder if any surge protector actually works...i would like to know...

would isolated ground plugs have prevented this ? dunno exatly what they do.
 
Fry your computer and insurance should pay for it. :D Atleast mine pays for computer/tv/electrical damage etc.

they stand behind their warranties and their stuff protects from every surge ive ever seen.

they used to show pics of totally melted, black, deformed products of theirs and advertize the letter that went with them from a user saying none of their equipment was hurt.

ive had several power 'events' when I was on an APC UPS which has surge supression built in and it has performed admirably.
 
Had a lightning storm this weekend just above my house, and there was quite a few surges going on. I was away at the time, but I came home to a dead UPS (its a generic PowMax brand). Good news was the computer was unharmed, so I guess the UPS did its job (not like it was terribly expensive being generic and all). I opened it up and noticed the PCB had a burnt smell to it some areas looked a little discolored (kinda like that toasty color) and alot of the caps on the UPS were bulging signifcantly. Now I'm looking for a APC UPS to replace the dead one.
 
One lightning storm years ago fried an old modem, my TG-16, and a VCR, this was like years ago. Since then, I haven't had problems.
