Lighting up a rackmount cabinet.

OK guys, I've never been a modder and know nothing about the best approach to a idea I have about how to give a nice glow out of two rackmount cabinets I'm picking up from work. They're some 42U racks (79" high x 24" wide), here's some pics I copied from ebay of the same rack to give you guys an idea about what I'm working with.

It's hard to tell from the pics, but the front door is curved outwards, with kind of a wave design in it vertically.

My plan is to repaint them either flat or glossy black, and one cabinet is to have red lights, the other blue. Since I've never worked with LED's or cold cathodes, or anything else I don't know how many lights it'll take to do this, and the best location to mount them. I was thinking get two 12" cathodes for each cabinet, and mount them in the center of the top and bottom of the front door, but unsure of how much light they give off, I dont know if one light in each cabinet will do it, if two is enough, or if it'll take more.

Anyone done this, or any suggestions?
 
Your going to be really suprised as to how much light it will take to Light those things up.

I work in a data center and we have 3 full size flourescent tubes for use so customers can light there indiviudal cabinets up.

Are you set on a particular color?

What i would suggest is get some of the cheasy Car Neon Kits (yes the ones that run off Dc) and buy you a cheap inverter. You can get the kits from anywhere and just go to your local electronics shop or possibly even radio shack and tell them you need to power some 12v dc stuff out of a wall outlet and they should be able to hook you up.

Those things are decently Bright and they are large enough to Fill the whole rack (at least some are). Then you don't have to worry about placement and whatnot also there is plenty of room between the actual rack mounts and the Front or back of the Rack to give you some room to mount em.

Most red CCFL's will look pink, unless you get one in a colored plexi tube. You can also use red stage light gel's. I would still use CCFL's though. To light a cabinet, I think you'd need at least 4 12" tubes. To do the same with neons would probably take twice as many.
