Light Keypress Gaming Keyboard

I currently have a DAS Ultimate Silent keyboard. Although I absolutely love this keyboard for typing, I find that the keys are too fatiguing for gaming. I also miss being able to quickly locate a key when my hands aren't on the home row (mmo's).

Does anybody have any suggestions for a keyboard with a lighter keypress and printed letters? Mechanical is nice, but not mandatory as long as the keys still feel solid since this won't be my primary typing keyboard. One with macro key functionality and N-Key rollover or as close as possible to it would be nice also.

Well that board has Brown switches according to the site. Do you prefer the Tactile feel or would you prefer a linear switch. Sounds like you might like a Cherry MX BLUE or RED depending on tactile or linear.

Thats a good question. I've had tactile keys all my life, so I really have no idea if I would like linear switches or not.

Well if you can find a store that has both on display that will help.

I'm sorry but WTF? Go to the gym maybe?

If a mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX Brown switches (or any other variant) are too "fatiguing" then I suggest lots of cardio in a work out routine. This is almost as hard for me to understand as the "my mouse is too heavy" threads I see on here once in awhile.

I bought a Logitech K300 a while back and really liked it for gaming. Its a smaller keyboard and has laptop style keys so the key travel is very short and good for gaming. Looks pretty cool too. $25'ish so cant really go wrong.

LMFAO! I actually thought the same thing. :D

Troll much, troll?

I am not referring to terrible fitness, I am extremely physically fit. I am referring to repetitive action fatigue that will happen no matter how fit you are when you make the same motions over and over for hours straight.

Next time try making a constructive comment.

You just called the HardOCP Motherboard Editor a troll.... lol... and his point is very valid. Brown switches arent that bad. Ive been on Blacks for a couple years now and I am used to it.

Status or position have no bearing on the constructive nature (or lack thereof) of a comment. I was looking for keyboard suggestions, not finger fitness suggestions.

Repativie action fatigue? I'm not even sure what that is. I can tell you that I'm on a computer about 16-18 hours a day mousing and typing. I've never experienced what it is you are talking about. I've been using computers this hard for over a decade. It doesnt' get much easier than Cherry MX switches for key presses and again if pressing keys is hurting you, there must be something wrong I'd guess. I don't know, I'm not a doctor.

Perhaps more masturbation is in order, or even finger / hand excercises? :D I don't know but this just seems like a silly complaint. However, if you want me to be serious and not make fun of your either over worked and weakened hands or your potentially girly little hands then I'd have to suggest trying a keyboard based on Cherry MX Clears or Cherry MX Reds. These are lighter than the Cherry MX Browns.

I've used the IBM Model M with the buckling spring switches for years, then moved on to Cherry MX Blacks and now Cherry MX Blues. Some of you guys have seen my posts, my longwinded articles and know that I game a lot in my free time. So I use keyboards and mice more than most. I don't have problems with keyboards hurting my hands. Mice can if they are a less than comfortable shape. Thus I just buy another one and through trial and error I find what works for me. Logitech G9x and Logitech G700 and MX1000 / MX1100 mice have all worked really well for me. Some older mice like the MX500 would some times bother me after about 12 hours or so. But the weight of them was never an issue. Often times it's because I claw grip the mouse rather than palming them. Really only the MX1000 and MX1100 have been comfortable for me to palm while the others I've mentioned were good no matter how I held them.

Relax. Don't go all internet tough guy on me. Again, something with Cherry MX Reds or Cherry MX Clears will probably be up your alley. As for specific boards, I can't say. I know Amazon carries the Filco's based on the Cherry MX Reds but since I don't own one and haven't ever seen one, I can't say much else.

And your response was no better...Atleast he followed up with some input for you.

Its similar to lifting weights. Slowly lifting a weight/holding it in place takes FAR more energy than simply pushing out reps. Same thing with a keyboard. With regular typing you just quickly tap a key and are done until the next time that finger's key is needed. Gaming involves sustained pressing of keys as well as rapid tapping of the same key over and over again. This is what causes the fatigue, and I had no such fatigue on my previous rubber dome keyboards, but they were all junk and had to be replaced on a regular basis so I decided to go with something that will last longer.

Edit: I've been doing more some research and I'm wondering if the fatigue is from the sudden stop of the key at the bottom of the keystroke due to hard plastic having no give. I have ordered some O-rings to mod my keyboard. Hopefully this will solve the problem.

Play a string instrument. Helps with the fatigue factor. Maybe your O-ring solution will help, have not tried it.

Would recommend some Cherry MX Reds though.

Check out keyboards with scissor switches (laptop style keys). Very low key travel height but good tactile feel. I use a Logitech illuminated keyboard myself and love it.

If you're looking for a more gaming oriented KB Razer Lycosa has a similar key action.

Unless a change has been made the Logitech illuminated keyboard is the worst keyboard ever for gaming. It has keyblocking.. try holding down W, Shift and then hit hte spacebar... you can't. Which messes up jumping in games when running forward. I had 2 of these before I realized it was an issue with the way the board was built. Now it sits in a closet.

I used to have the logitech illuminated keyboard. Not only were the keys mushy, not only did it have terrible key rollover, but the keys got sticky and wouldn't press correctly after a few months (no, i never spilled any food/drink/whatever on it).

Yup, my first board the L key got stuck and I had to RMA it. I don't know why this keyboard gets good reviews...

You could consider the new Corsair K90 Mechanical Keyboard, it Cherry MX Red switches, which are lighter than the already light Cherry MX Black switches. The keyboard is of extremely high build quality and I am personally loving mine. It also has quite a few macro keys so it may be the keyboard that best suits you.

Didn't Corsair cheap out with the function keys all being membrane based? I know there were rumblings of that in the Corsair keyboard thread.

I don't disagree with most of the things you said, but I have to point out that this is incorrect.

MX Clears require more force to actuate than either Brown or Blue switches. It's only by about 5g, but it's still a stiffer keypress.

My bad. Too many damned switches to keep track of. :D
