Licensing for Windows 7 on Xendesktop

New to virtualization. How is Windows Licensing handled in Xendesktop? Can I use retail licensing? Or do I have to use Volume Licensing? If so what needs to be in place to support this? Sorry guys new to this and just trying to get moving in the right direction.

I think you need to use Volume Licensing to be 100% covered.

I think we used eOpen with Software assurance.
 
There are two ways now, apparently you can't use the Retail licenses do to EULA changes by M$.

You can go with VDI license subscriptions. Best if you want to use thin clients, or reuse current thin clients; which is what we're trying to do.
or
You can buy new OEM computers and add software assurance and you'll get VDI.

5-year cost of the two, it's pretty much cheaper to pay the annual subs vs. buying new machines. Both cost way more than using Retail licenses, so M$ makes more money. Also apparently the sub's go directly through M$, so they DO make more money.

I've been working on a VDI project recently and found out that you get gang raped by M$ now. :(

It also does not matter if you go with Hyper-V VDI or XenDesktop VDI, licensing is the same. You also need RDP CAL's... so more $$$
 
you do not need TS/RDH CALs for XenDesktop.
You do for XenApp though.
