Hey you guys. I'm soon going to be ordering my new computer and the case it's going into is going to be the v300b.
I just had a few questions I wanted to get sorted out.

- As of yet i haven't picked a psu, I remember hearing that it had to be shorter that 140mm or something like that. The base minimum I'm looking for would have to be a modular psu with at least 700w with strong 12v rails. if you would be able to recommend some that would be great.

- As of right now the gpu I'm going to be getting is going to be the 8800gtx, unless Nvidia or ATI releases something worth while. Does any one happen to know when the 8900/ 9000 card is going to be released, or any thing on ATI's side?

- In terms of cooling, I'm going to also need some recommendations. I've already chosen case fans, but if anyone has any tips on overall case cooling that would be great. What I am in need of help with is my cpu hs & fan. That will be going on lga775 Q6600.
I really like the concept of this fan http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835220004 but I heard that it wouldn't fit. i just want to make sure thats true.

If you are looking for modular I think the Corsair 620w is a solid choice. I think I remember hearing it was able to run SLI 8800GTXs! The Gamexstream 700w is also standard size and would work. Cords are long, but it come with a Velcro strap that helps a bit.

ATi’s X2900XT is out and it sucks. :( The 9800GTX? is due out at the end of the year.

Not sure about cooling... Blue Orb II could be a good choice.
 
You can not fit any of the current high end video cards in a V300B without major modding to the drive cage!

the v300 is a lovely case. larger than i expected, and perhaps underated because of that in these forums. my mods are reasonably simple in the end and a great improvement to temps and quietness. i second that the corsair psu is a good one, very quiet (mine the 520W).

Oh by the way; the 2 case fans supplied with the case are actuallyt quite good en very quiet.... So no need te replace them imho...
 
Rosco, I really like your mods. Very good idea with the fan there, but I couldn't give up my HD slots for that. This has been the first case I've had that I've modded, mostly out of necessity with the x1900 being too long to fit (dremel to the rescue). Then I put in a fan on the left so the vid card can breathe, and the controller switch thingies for the hell of it. I had to put in the optional couple of 40mm fans to keep air going out by the cpu, and clipped my blue orb's wings a little to fit it in.

I'm really impressed with the results. I think the left side fan helped a whole bunch... my video card doesn't go above 75 C after long game sessions. I do wonder though, how did you mount the 120mm fans in the front (edit: nm, tape ftw) ? I know they can fit easily but I don't see how you attached them. Also, did you try the case stock with the 80s? If so, did you see a big difference. I think the 80s are pretty nice so far.
 
thanks easter_ferret (sorry, but i just feel embarrassed even typing that :p ).

i never even tried out the stock 80mm fans, although plenty of poeple say they are fine (and now you too). I had already decided on the mods before even buying the stuff, and in the end i'm just too lazy to build the system then take it apart perform the mods.

the 120mm are "stuck" to the front panel with double sided foam tape at each corner. i dumped the stock fan holder and just glued the power button assembly. because the front panel is a basically one large grill, i used a black marker on the tape before sticking things down, so that the tape is not visible. there is also a piece of black cardboard stuck between the front panel and the 5.25" rack to complete the black-front effect (again, too lazy to drill rivets, dismantle the whole rack, paint and reassemble, like at least one other has done). i did not know how secure the tape would be but the fans are holding in there for around 4 months now. i have since added black mesh filters to the inner side of the fans, as i was getting a lot of internal dust. these are attached by screws ;)

i only want the one hard drive (as i have external raid nas), so losing the hd rack to the psu is no problem for me, but obviously a killer for some other people.

i'm glad you have found an efficient way to keep your graphics cool - do you mean you cut a hole in the side panel for a fan? for me this would be blocked by a pci card. in the past i have cut side panels in a shuttle box, but it was really difficult to get a clean finish. the v300 panel is thicker than a shuttle, so i expect it was pretty difficult ??

Yeah, I cut a hole in the left side panel, pretty much the mirror of the one on the right. I cut a square around the one on the right to make a window, because my blue orb was too wide to get in there with a fan. I used the 80x20 fan from the right side and it doesn't interfere with anything, not even the usb jumper thingies. I really wonder why they didn't include a fan like this to begin with, although it joins a rather long list. I also have 2 40x10 fans attached with cable ties to the HD cover. It keeps a trickle of air going over the HDs.

I now have a grand total of 10 little fan motors running (counting the heatsinks) and it's getting a little too on the the noisy side. I'm hoping the 120s in the front will help a bit. I'm thinking about just hot gluing them down, because I'm still a nub and don't want to ruin anything.
 
Well as it turns out I haven't had a chance to order yet.

So today i was looking at pricing on gpu's and found that the price jump between the gtx's and ultras are very low. so I might be going with an ultra now, but wanted to know if anyone here has throw an ultra into this case?
From what I can tell they are the same size of the gtx's and the only con would be the increased heat.

Any opinions would be great.

Just got this case, installed an E4400 w/stock C2D cooler on a Asrock Conroe945G-DVI. Vid card is a x850XT-PE with a VF900-Cu cooler. Seasonic S12-II 380W PSU, Crucial ballistix 6400 2x1GB, Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB

I don't use the 80 mm side fan, it makes a ticking noise at all voltages and doesn't do much. Replaced the front intake fans with Nexus Real Silent 80mm fans, much less noise and a little less air. Keeping CPU cooler at 50% with Speedfan = can only hear the Nexus fans (12V 1500rpm). Thinking about putting another 80mm fan behind the vacant PCI slot openings (3x) on the back.

Running FAH SMP client 24/7 with 20% oc (2.4 GHz, FSB 240). Temps (Speedfan): CPU 28C idle/ 42C load, System 41C (load), HDD 45-50C. Vid card (ATiTool): 43C idle / 70-75C load

If you getting temp like that with that hardware, I'm a tad bit scared lol.

Any one have a Ultra in there? Or a really hot GTX?
