LGA775 Quad?

I'm really starting to notice my PC not being able to handle games very well... With new games out supporting and using quad core processors, it really is time to upgrade.

The problem is, I don't want to go and buy a new MB and processor and RAM... From the looks of it, a cheap i5 system would end up costing me about $400...

So to keep things cheap, I want to simply upgrade to an old quad using the same MB I have and use the LGA775 socket. What quad is the cheapest and best value right now? I know newegg has the Q8300 for about $150, but i'd like to go lower if possible... Any suggestions?

Look for a Q9550 or Q9650 used on the forum. I wouldn't invest more than $150.

Yeah, saw those but they go for $300+ new... I'd really prefer to get a quad new/refurb, but maybe I can try looking around for used Q9550s.

Q9550 are great processors - try and get a E0 if you can. I saw on on the buy/sell today.

Also, make sure that your mobo supports the Quad Core - if you haven't updated your bios in a while you might need too.

One last thing. Are you planning on overclocking?

Yeah, I saw the Q9550 in the FS/T forum as well.

I might actually go for the 6600 since I don't really need a TON of power... I have water cooling set up right now so I might try out some overclocking, but nothing extreme.

EDIT:

Come to think of it, I have an old computer HP that needs to be upgraded/thrown out with a 6600 in it... I have $2000 in gift cards at the HP store as well, so I could just replace the old HP and take out that processor.

This is why you should have bought AMD. You could be upgrading to 6 Core for cheap and Quad Core for 3rd world country cheap if you went for an AM2+ or AM3 board instead of a 775. Now your going to get ripped off by the Intels awesomeness of design. ;)

My advice if you want new is to just sell your old CPU, Mobo, Ram for 150.00-200.00 if possible or the whole system for more cash, and flip it into a new system. I flipped my e6600 @ 3Ghz, 2 GB ddr2 800 kingston, ASUS SLI Mobo, win XP, old case, old power supply, old gfx card, old 120GB HD, old mouse+keyboard to a college student. Then took the money and picked up an X3 that is now a Quad with bios option enabled, 4GB 1333, Sata 6/USB 3.0 mobo. With the money left over picked up Win 7 pro, New Lian Li case (no more dust), Blu Ray 3d drive, GX9, new keyboard. 3 TB of storage now instead of 120GB ;) Didn't cost me a dime in the end, and that college student is still very very happy.

Do this if you want better gaming scaling, multi-threaded program performance, and SATA storage mass HD video storage possibliltys only. That's where I noticed the advantage @ anyhow. Good luck.

The auction says it is a q6600, the 8M cache means it is a Quad as well.

I'm not talking about your link. I was directing my comment at the poster directly above me talking about his old HP.

Q9550 E0 great CPU for S775 and is great over clocker.

You should be able to find one for $150 used.

I actually would have gotten an AMD system if I bought this, but this was actually built by a company and they didn't have a use for it anymore... I need to keep around the parts just in case, but I have been randomly swapping out parts in the machine for a little while :p

I'll probably get an entirely new desktop in another year, but this is to keep me happy until I do so (BF3 :D)

Don't waste your money on a new one, grab a used one off the forums.
