I think most people were expecting plenty of mini-itx boards to come with LGA1155 considering what has become available lately on LGA1156 but it is nice to have a picture of one early example.
 
Intel and it's new sockets.....this is BS now they want a yearly product cycle or what?
 
Well, either the socket was going to have better placement, or it would be left to the heatsink manufacturers to design more offset solutions.

I guess we know now who's gonna have to give first. :rolleyes:

Everyone is getting a new socket for next gen. No point in bitching about it.. We can either take it & Buy new shit or not. Either way they will keep changing.
 
Yes but 775 lasted forever now they are changing sockets so often it makes upgrades very expensive, it's pretty stupid

did it now.. how many generations of CPU's did 775 last? because as far as I know it was 1 generation, Just like 1156 & 1366.
 
Pentium IV, the Core Solo/Core Duo series and the Core 2 series.

Most older motherboards would not work with newer lower power Core 2 Wolfdale CPUs but many motherboards would work with just a BIOS update afaik.

Thats the tail end of P4's & one other generation (the change from the core duo to core 2 duo was not a new generation of CPU, it was just a little more maturity in the same design). & To be honest I Diddnt think that there were any 775 p4's, so you are right about that. But it still wouldnt have made upgrading any easier then someone now with a g6950 on an 1156 being hable to upgrade to a core i3, i5 & the 1156 i7's
 
LGA775 lasted a long time, certainly. But honestly, it didn't take that long for AMD to go 754 -> 939 -> AM2 either. Just because Intel has one "quick" generation (we don't know how long 1155 etc will stay "current"), everyone's suddenly bitching. Would I prefer the Sandy Bridge stuff to be compatible with current stuff? Optimally, yeah. But having to upgrade motherboard too is hardly something new. It was Socket A times when I last upgraded CPU without upgrading motherboard as well. Tech goes forward. Backwards redundancy can cause problems or sometimes things just don't work despite physical compatibility. Being able to bring out new stuff without worrying too much about the old stuff brings bigger advancement. The PC platform definitely is suffering enough from its outdated heritage as it is.
 
But the again AM2 has lasted and some AM3 CPUs are backwards compatible.

Bitching because of a one year product cycle, of course, it harms consumers and benefits big name PC vendors. I'm pretty sure Sandy Bridge based CPUs could have been made for P55/H55 motherboards. They now decided to integrate clock generator, etc just because they can do so and at the same time they are gonna charge for overclocking.

This business model makes a lot of sense for them and for vendors. It doesn't make sense for consumers.
 
Yes, AM2 did last, but so did LGA775. All I'm saying that it's not just Intel who sometimes has short platform lifespans. If anyone expected 1156/1336 to be another LGA775 in terms of longevity... well, they should've been more realistic :p
 
The CPU socket placement is disappointing. I was really hoping they'd switch back to a traditional location this time around. As long as the big names have i7 capable mITX available on launch, instead of a year after, I can certainly deal with the odd placement though.:cool:

[Edit]Just did a bit of Googleing, and found some site that has more pictures. iXBTlabs, whoever they are, have pictures of the board the OP listed and three more. Link. One they claim is an MSI board, and it has a correct CPU socket placement! Of course they then went and put a x1 PCIe slot on it....:rolleyes:

Another disappointment is the location of the SATA ports.... I have the Thermaltake SD100. I came with a mini sata cable for low profile dvds. But it won't reach the SATA ports. If the SATA ports were in the normal position near the PCIe slots, all would have been ok. But I guess that's not possible because the memory slots take up that space.

Its actually in the normal spot for 2 of them.. & Neither has the x16 slot.

I hear alot of complaints about this, But I had no heat issues with the stock cooler on an i3 mITX board (the intel with the funky placement) using a PCIe graphics. Sandy Bridge is supposed to be even cooler & Thus the stock heatsink is even smaller. Well Perhaps the Stock i3/i5 cooler will fit & the extra surface area will have the added cooling needed for the overclocks everyone is after.
I Dont really see it as a bad thing, I Just see it as some other thing.
 
The socket placement is probably fine for most builds, but I'd like to push the envelope a little. An i7-2600 with an aftermarket cooler might be tough, but only because the heatsink may run into the PCIe slot.

Heat isn't the primary issue. Noise is. For me, anyway. Larger cooler equals bigger fan equals cool and silent, especially when it's a HT-enabled Quad instead of an i3.

This unoptimal socket placement does allow some good coolers so it's not all bad. But I really don't see a reason why they put it there instead of farther from the PCI-e slot, where basically all coolers could fit.
 
Well unfortunately the heatsink manufacturers will have to get on the ball, and I think as sales of the Samuel 17s and AXP-140s increase then they'll see the value in such a design. Intel made their choice, and that's how it's going to be. I personally got an H50 for mine :)
 
Its not as easy as just moving the cpu. The MB is full of layers of traces. It might just be too complex to do it some other way.
 
At least two manufacturers (DFI, J&W) moved it for the LGA1156 socket too. It's not like it can't be done, but for some reason Intel doesn't seem to want to.
 
DFI used the reference design for P55 motherboards. They didnt change anything...

J&W however did move it.
 
Come to think of it, was there even such a thing as a reference P55 ITX board? Because I can't recall seeing any other P55 ITX boards at all than the DFI.

Well the CPU was in the same relative location as it would be in, say micro ATX.
 
Well, the P55 socket on the DFI MI-P55 baord had more room around the socket & it was placed farther away from the RAM & PCI-E slot..The H55N-USB3(MITX) had the socket clsoer & almost up against the RAM slots & PCI-E slot...I like the layout of the DFI better & could fit a GeminII cooler on it with an open bench...=)
