I had a quick question about cooling an LGA 775 2.8 ghz p4.

I was offering a friend of mine help in choosing parts for his new computer and somewhere along the line we ended up ordering the LGA p4 instead of the standard socket 478. He went to a local dealer and bought a s478 chip and was planning on returning the LGA to newegg. But it looks like he may not be able to return it since it is past 7 days... I have been wanting to upgrade my chip from this old athlon xp 1900+ msi kt3-aru combo so I figured id help him out and buy the chip from him. But it seems after researching the chip the only motherboard I can get is the Abit AS8... since I have a AGP ATI 9700 pro. I hear that the AS8 is a pretty good board (not like it matters since its the only one lol). Well anyways my question is what kind of cooling solutions do they have out for the LGA chips, I called abit directly and they said that the old socket 478 coolers do not work, which rules out my first 2 choices: the zalman 7000A-CU and the thermalright sp-94. Well the only decent cooler I have seen that is lga compatible is this large heavy crazy looking soltution from thermaltake...

Well I did not like thermaltakes cooling solutions when I first got this computer but I hear some decent things about that crazy cooler.

Well anyways anyones thoughts on this dillema would be greatly appreciated.

I would have much rather waited a few more months for a new chip but this upgrade is kinda forced... so I have no choice... I would rather have gotten a athlon 64 chip or a p4 northwood since these new prescotts have no speed gains and increased heat... but oh well its a nice upgrade form a 1900+...

EDIT:

o yea here is my current comp specs just in case

-MSI KT3 Ultra - ARU 5.6 bios
-SLK-800 w/ TTSmartfan 2
-Athlon XP 1900+
-550 watt Antec Tp
-512mb 2700 Corsair XMS Platinum
-Western Digital 80 gb Special Edition
-TDK 52x velocd
-FIC 9700 Pro w/ Vantec Iceburg4
-Creative Sound Blaster Audigy
Lian-li pc65 silver

I know but if you read above im kinda stuck getting it... but could you elaborate on the bugs?

EDIT: nm reading about them now... that sucks wonder how frequent the problems arise and if they are fixable?

Well im not buying anything tonight but im leaning towards the crazy tall thermaltake tower thing and two of their 90 mm silent cat fans and the abit AS8 mobo... any thoughts besides the bugs and heat issues?

you could always sell it........................if your as lucky as the bastards on ebay getting 999$ for a 6800gt then you could buy something ALOT nicer :D

get the full copper thermaltake tower with 2 92mm fans, i hear it cools incredibly well.

First off, kudos to you for being such a good friend (and no i'm not being sarcastic here) You are willing to venture into the cutting edge (usually bleeding edge) platform which has yet to work towards a proven trackrecord (which I think it will over time), I sincerely commend you. As for your situation, I humbly offer you what I would do in your shoes.

My first option would to do as xSyzygy666x suggested, to sell it on ebay. Reason being is that AS8 is an interm solution (interm as in interm SDRAM P4 motherboards) . I hate interm solutions simply because they quickly fall out of favor, (ask yourself how popular were SDRAM P4 motherboards?) If I wanted to move to LGA, then I would move completely over to the new platform...again...once it has prooven it's track record. I doubt you would want to move over completely to the new platform anyways which is understandable due to the expense of new RAM, video cards..etc However, if you look at your situation from a different perspective, an interm solution here isn't as bad as the SDRAM P4 boards because there isn't a performance hit between the 865 on the AS8 and the new 915/925. In fact, current generation PCIE 16x video cards are actually slower at times compared to AGP 8x. First gen DDR2 is on par with the latest DDR. But things would change as the new platform evolves to take advantage of the new bandwidth.

If selling isn't an option then I would stick with the retail heatsink (assuming the LGA chip is retail which it should be) reason being: With the notible exception to thermaltake (aka thermal-take your money for crap we don't really manufacture), there are obviously no aftermarket heatsinks just yet and as in any smart shopper, choice is key. Thermaltake in my book have a long standing, pathetic trak record (others may disagree and sware by them), the majority of their products I've tested or used have either; operated fine for a few initial months and then crapped out or just flat out does not work/incompatible due to bad product design and/or construction quality. Thermaltake have not been a real innovator, just the usual asian copy cat (thermalright-like designs with the volcano 12). And no I do not work for thermalright or any competitor of thermaltake. I have seen thermaltake over the years, just releasing (spewing month after month) multitude of unoriginal, bloated, and ultimately cheesy products that have overwhelmed their entire product line, which most are just pathetic immitations of other quality products. Thermaltake IMHO relies on eye-candy rather than real, prooven performance to sell their over-priced junk. Of those that aren't quite junk, they are often rebranded, run-of-the-mill products made by other companies which thermaltake markets as "performance products". I rarely see a serious and dedicated user put thermal-junk into their machines, if they do, they more than likely find out they are junk within a few months. Again, I'd stick to retail heatsink and wait until thermalright releases something which i'm sure they will if LGA takes off. Side note: i'm not pimpin thermalright either, they have their faults as well, but the difference here is, they have a prooven track record with quality built products indicated by the numerous reviews and overwhelmingly positive user statements.

I apologize for my long-winded response/rant. And the best of luck to you, whatever you choose to do.
