Hey,

Any word on the core counts and/or clock speeds on the newest Sandy Bridge E CPUs that'll come out? I'm really holding off my itch to get an x58 setup with a nice shiny 970, but I'm not sure if I can hold out much longer!
 
7 cores clocked @ 4.3GHz with a 6.2GHz turbo accompanying 6 channels of DDR5.

In all seriousness it is still pretty vague. People think there will be six to eight cores. No idea on clock speeds either.
 
Damn! I mean I see from a business perspective why Intel's being so secretive, but still...I want to know!
 
Hm. I'm pretty sure Sandy Bridge E is not LGA2011.
It goes Sandy Bridge -> Sandy Bridge - E -> Ivy Bridge -> LGA2011 stuff
SB-E might be a shrink of SB, but i know Ivy Bridge is a shrink of SB for sure.
i might be wrong, but there aren't a lot of details out yet :(

so LGA2011 is quite far away.
My guess is 4-8 phys cores with HT.
quad channel ram is high possibility
and pci-e 3.0

im waiting for the new architecture after SB which is supposed to be developed from the same team that did the Nehalem processors

It seems LGA2011 will be the high end socket (there was talk of a LGA1356 at one point too but talk of that seems to have dissapeared) for sandy bridge (and likely ivy bridge too). From the articles i've read it looks like chips will have 4-8 cores though the 8 cores may not come out when the socket first releases.

I haven't seen any official word on clockspeeds but I would expect the stock speeds to be slightly higher than the stock speeds of the top LGA1155 chips.

Ahh. I am still mad at amd for AM2+ since my ASUS M2Ns at work can only be upgraded to Phenom1 chips which I do not want.

Kinda sucks that Intel is switching sockets so much these days.

I do not see this changing for the better any time soon. Good thing you can recover 60% of a 2 year old motherboards value selling it used.

If you go by this then LGA2011 is soon with Sandy Bridge-E

However there are a lot of different ideas and opinions on how it will turn out. The second half of this year and the first of next is messy.

Your probably not going to upgrade the FM1 cpu so what does it matter, I wouldn't be supprised if most Lame-o's were soldered directly to boards.

has anyone seen any leaked slides or anything indicating whether lga 2011 will have pcie3.0 or not? originally it seemed like the word was a yes, but now i'm hearing the opposite.
 
The impression I got from the most recent articles I've seen was that LGA2011 sandy bridge would not have PCIe 3.0. However it will have a LOT more PCIe than LGA1155 so the overall PCIe situation should still be better with LGA2011 sandy bridge than with LGA1155 ivy bridge.

SB-E is LGA2011. Ivy Bridge is the die shrink of both SB and (eventually) SB-E. LGA 2011 will have quad channel memory, but it looks like PCIe 3.0 was dropped.

It is because Intel decided to segment the market with a mainstream socket and a high-end socket. LGA 775 was both, but they split the market into 1156 and 1366, and now 1155 and 2011.

Bzzt on both.

FM1 is for desktops and the socketed Llano processor. And Intel did similar to what AMD did on AM2/AM3 for years. LGA 775 boards generally had excellent backwards compatibility, but actually better due to the memory controller not being on the CPU.

OTOH, CPUs on AMD boards need to have a compatible memory controller (and other things). You can't stick an old AM2 processor on AM3/AM3+ because it lacks a DDR3 memory controller. Nevermind the many other changes AMD made to the socket and the incompatibilities it caused. I've been "stuck" with a few AMD boards because newer processors just weren't compatible despite having an electrically compatible CPU socket... and a compatible memory controller.

The reality is that AMD's tweaking of the socket many times over the years has caused significant incompatibility, oftentimes requiring a new motherboard purchase to use the latest CPUs. I do get a laugh at the fantasy though. It's as if the biggest AMD fans don't even buy AMD hardware. ;)

SB-E will be 2011
IB will be a shrink of SB at all levels, but the enthusiast chips may come after the mainstream.
I'm not sure we'll see 8 cores until the IB shrink, but I could be wrong.
Quad channel RAM will arrive with 2011, its part of the reason there are so many pins.

That will be Haswell in 2013 and yeah, I have that same temptation too, unless high end IB-E exceeds my expectations.
 
Ya I would be curious to see that link as well. Seems like the last couple of things I've read only mentioned 6 core parts but I have seen mention of 8 core parts as well.
 
Intel may have power, but they jump from socket to socket way too often if you ask me (I have an 1156 i7-860). I'm sure it will do well.
 
And now we've got native 10 cores...:p

Sure AMD has the "12 core" magny cours, but that's MCM, and that doesn't count :p

Better performance vs better legacy support is always a tradeoff.

I would agree that it seems like intel is tilted slightly more towards the better performance mark and amd is tilted slightly towards the better legacy support side. Both have their merits depending on what you're going for.

Take BD for example. Some people love that it's AM3+ and has the associated backward compatibilities while other people seem to wish amd would have just put it in a new socket to make it more powerful.
 
I'm a fan of new sockets. Seriously, if you're gonna make a generational leap, don't constrain yourself, CPU companies! when I upgrade, I usually get a new mobo anyway for new platform features.

Agreed. AMD was int he same boat in 2005-2006. They had 4 different socket types running at the same time.
 
I'm a fan of performance for my dollar. When I'm buying I expect it to work (have some brand preferences there).
Between AMD and Intel its what it does for the price.
I'll build a Sandy Bridge after the Z68 boards show up. And unless Intel changes its pricing marketing schemes I expect to stay with Z68 Sandy Bridge a while.
At least till the software catches up.
