Looking at two options for a new 19" display at the moment for both business and graphics/video applications. In the red corner is the LG Flatron L1960TR (http://de.lge.com/prodmodeldetail.d...rentId=0401&modelCodeDisplay=L1960TR&model=10 - LG Germany, hope you can make out the specs, no info on the US/UK sites). In the blue corner is the Viewsonic VG930m (http://www.viewsoniceurope.com/UK/Products/LCDGraphics/VG930m.htm).
Having done a bit of research, I liked the VG930m specs and price. I'm in the UK where Viewsonic have very limited distribution in the high street. Couldn't find the VG930m anywhere, but have managed to see a couple of other Viewsonic models with similar contrast ratio (600-700:1) and response time (8 ms) in shops. Most comparable was probably the VA703m (although 17"). Liked what I saw and can order the VG930m online. However in my quest I came across the LG L1960TR, which is available at the same price: GBP179.99. In terms of specs it's a beast: 3000:1 contrast ratio (after DFC "inflation"), 2ms response time, 170/170 angles and HDCP on the DVI connection. I was impressed with the quality of this display. It was super sharp and looked good both for text and images with flawless video playback.
I have an Acer laptop with a 15.4" CrystalBrite display (glossy coating). Love that screen except that it is highly reflective. The L1960TR (not glossy) looked equally sharp but without the reflection. I do however have some worries about it. Viewing angles did not look as per spec and it was very bright. Sure you can turn down the brightness, but may not be able to maintain good contrast (not sure how well it handles darker shades).
My purpose for the new display is all-round but with emphasis on both coding/office applications and graphics/image processing. Gaming is not important, but decent video playback is. The VG930m will no doubt fit the bill and 8ms is fast enough. The L1960TR however appears to pack a greater punch for the same price and first impressions are great, but I am worried about brightness/contrast and potential eye strain for long hours of usage. I am also trying to figure out why the L1960TR is so cheap with those specs, since it isn't a special offer. Is there a problem with it or are LG dumping prices to gain market share?
So, anybody out there using either of these screens (as I mentioned I haven't actually seen the VG930m in action)? Any opinions or recommendations at all would be much appreciated. In the meantime I am waiting for LG to get back to me about their dead pixel policy for this model. Viewsonic are very open about theirs, same cannot be said about LG.
