HDMI VRR doesn't require driver support as far as I'm aware. As long as both the input and output devices have HDMI 2.1 VRR will work implicitly.

AMD has already stated HMDI 2.1 VRR will be part of FreeSync:

"Radeon Software will add support for HDMI 2.1 Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) technology on Radeon RX products in an upcoming driver release. This support will come as an addition to the Radeon FreeSync technology umbrella, as displays with HDMI 2.1 VRR support reach market."

Furthermore, VRR itself in an evolution of the original Adaptive Sync standard proposed by AMD, which I detailed here.

AMD is calling it FreeSync when used with their cards. Which is fine, because the standard is literally made up.

Which never existed in HDMI as it has in DisplayPort for eDP use in laptops.

I wonder about this- to me, saying 'doesn't require driver support' seems a bit off, as you should be able to disable VRR in the GPU drivers. So perhaps by spec it will be enabled by default?


[I can't think of any good reasons to disable VRR, supposing it is working properly; it is certainly possible that there could be complications, though, so having the option would be desirable]
