Leveraging LAN desktop storage

Is there a system or software out there that can leverage spare storage of LAN client machines and present it as a single usable location? I got to wondering about all the wasted storage on my network. Each desktop machine has a hard drive or SSD somewhere between 80GB and 1TB with all of 10-40GB used. Since we run multiple shifts they're on most of the time.
No idea how it might work but peaked my curiosity.
 
I want to say that was the design idea behind GlusterFS, but i haven't looked at the project in a long time as it didn't meet the requirements of the system we were implementing at work at the time. You might try taking a look at gluster.org
 
i guess the issue is seeing it as 1 big storage pool, how will it split individual files, will a 1Mb file have 200kb on one server, 300k on another and 500Kb on another drive and then if one system is off, or drive dies then what?
