So it looks like the Radeon 5830 is down to a reasonable price, and I'm looking at picking one up. There are limitations, sure, but it's more palatable to me right now than a 5850.

Here are the details: I run a 22 inch Samsung lcd at 1680x1050. I play rpgs, strategy, racing and the like, not so much on the FPS games, just not my style. Dragon Age, World of Warcraft, Starcraft 2, Blur, Dawn of War, stuff like that. Current machine is a Core i5-750 at 3.8ghz, 4gb Gskill Ripjaws, MSI P55-GD80, WD Black 640gb, EVGA Geforce 6800gs (a holdover from a buddy's pc while I decided what card I want).

Hardocp seems to stand by what they said when they reviewed it, and I trust them more than any of there review site, and it's a choice between a MSI Hawk 5770 and a 5830. Here's the kicker: MSI Hawk 5770 is around $190, 5830 is $215 after rebate (rebates suck, but that's fine).

I know lots of people have a stink about the 5830, but a 5850 just isn't going to happen. I'm looking for the word from the best community on the net. Let's hear it.

The HD5830 allows much better settings than the HD5770. If they are within $50 of each other I definitely recommend the HD5830 over the HD5770.

My overclocked HD5830 runs my 3 22" 1680x1050 LCDs + DP-to-VGA adapter (~$30) in Eyefinity at medium/high settings mixed in games like L4D2, Dirt2, AvP, and MW2. I upgraded from a HD5770 after buying two extra monitors. The HD5770 could not even run these games at all medium settings in Eyefinity. Looks like the HD5830 has actually gone up in price ~$20 since the release of the GTX465 and its crappy price. I picked up my HD5830 for $200 a month ago.

Same experience, but no eyefinity. Sold 5770 and grabbed a 5830. At stock it's faster, overclocked you basically have a stock 5850 if you get good core clocks. Most of the 5830 have excellent coolers. My sapphire ran kombuster for 30 minutes with fan speed at 60% at 1000/1200 and only hit 58.

After having the 5770 I feel it is overrated. You're better off spending a little more and getting more performance. If you can't afford the 5850 and can get the 5830 around 220 or less, get it.

My 5770 ran at 1000/1350 and it was a good deal slower then the 5830 at stock.

At the prices you are quoting the 5830 is you best bang for buck by a big margin. As others have said with a half decent overclock you will be running at stock 5850 performance. From what I've read a 5770 runs at half the performance of a 5870. If you can get your 5830 overclocked near a stock 5850 you will be getting around 80% of the performance of a 5870. It also seems the perfect performance card for the resolution and games you like playing. Should see you in business for a while.

I love the way video cards are marketed these days, with just a little luck and some tweaking you can usually get performance of the next card up the line. Assuming you aren't getting a card that has been utterly neutered.
