Nice setup, man. I'm not jealous at all.

My old Mac (and I mean OLD):

There's hope for me, though. I was just given a G4 that'll be replacing the old beige box.

How does one get someone to give them a G4? I've been trying to figure out how to get one for a while without paying anything. haha

How's the picture quality of the new Apple monitors?
Most likely comparable to other modern displays. A welcome change for apple displays. :p

How much was your system cost in total?

Let's see, the Mac was about 2k and the monitor was about $1,200. Total cost $3,200. It's more if you consider that I added RAM and upgraded the video card.

cinema display ?

is that wider than widescreen ? ie like in the cinemas where a film actually fills teh screen ?

Cheers

I do a lot of freelance PC moonlighting and make some decent mad-money, but I don't charge much of anything when I help out a friend. When I build them new PC, or maybe just consult on the purchase and save them a bunch of cash, I'm often given their old box if they don't have a use for it.

If the hardware is viable, I rebuild it and find a family with young children and no PC. I see it as a good way to use our hobby to good benefit.

This G4 will eventually make it to one such family, but I'm going to use the opportunity to get (somewhat) up to speed on Macs and OSX.

Skippy, How do you like the 20" display? I'm waiting for mine. I have a 17" right now and I can't wait to extend the desktop outword, What G5 do you have?

I'd post pics of my macs, but they're 400 miles away, one is hidden in a desk and the other one is on its side in a closet. They're both performas. Blech.

Post pictures of my Macs, eh? Hmm, this is going to be interesting...as I have quite a few Macs (and PCs) in my computer collection. Well, here we go...

To kick things off, here is my most recently aquired Mac. It's a spiffy little G4 Cube I picked up on eBay a few weeks ago for $400 that I'm turning into a project machine. Turns out that the Cube came from Los Alamos Labs...which explains why it was missing a few parts (no big deal, though), So far I've put in a 120GB 8MB cache Seagate HDD and a FastMac 2x SuperDrive. I have a FastMac 1.4GHz G4 upgrade that I'm going to mod into the Cube and I hope to eventually throw dual 1.4's or 1.5's in there along with a 9800Pro (to do all of this, I plan on removing the DC/DC VRM and replacing it with a PSU from one of those Shuttle SFF boxes to run along side the Cube's standard PSU...as well as a few other mods). Also, incase you're wondering why I have a bunch of FastMac products... well... as of last Friday, I used to work as a Tech. for AllMac/800-we-fix-macs/FastMac and I got some pretty killer discounts so I decided to pick up a few things before I left (even though it ate up most of my last paycheck)....though, my ex-boss did say that he'd hook me up with parts if I ever needed any (very cool) :D

Next up, one of my main workhorses. My original 366MHz G3 iBook Special Edition:
epyon.jpg

The main Photoshop machine in the house, a 867MHz QuickSilver 2001 G4:
quicksilverSparticus.jpg

The Blue & White G3 (upgraded to 500MHz G3 and OC'd to 550MHz) I have in my closet that acts as a network fileserver and web/FTP server:

The 17" LCD iMac (800MHz G4) that I use for a bunch of stuff:
FPiMac.jpg

The 333MHz G3 tray loading Lime iMac that I loaned to my Grandparents to use:

My modded original AirPort Base Station:

My old Apple eMate:
eMate300.jpg

My old PowerBook 170 and PowerBook 5300c along with an Apple TechStep sitting between them:

...and now we venture into the attic where I have an old Mac Classic and a IIvx:
classicAnd2vx.jpg

...as well as an old LCII with a couple of external SCSI drives:

There's one more Mac that isn't pictured and that's the slot loading Sage iMac that I loaned to my other grandparents to use. If you want to check out a couple of my modded PCs, just head over to the Case Modding forum and go to the gallery.

Here are a couple more random photos:

My FastMac 1.4GHz G4 upgrade (will eventually find its way into the Cube...after some modding) and an extra bare G3 CPU that someone gave me:

A quick shot of the corner of my room (forgot to put the iBook back into its usual spot, though...which is why it's missing from the photo):

Forget your machines. Let's see some good pics of that view you have out your window.
