did this last time i did a build in gen hardware. figure, should be just as much fun the second time in the oc forum =p

system is built, burned in, ready to go.

heres what we got to work with:

fractal arc midi case
i5 2500k
antec ea 650 green power supply
22x LG sata burner
Kingston Hyperx khx1600c9d3k2/8gx
gigabyte hd7870 oc 2gb
hitachi 1tb sata 6 oem
gigabyte ga-z77x-udh5 motherboard
corsair h100 cooler

only thing ive done is run the xms memory profile to get the ram to 1600 but i figure we'll reset to defaults to get this going.

so multiplier first? or run baseline tests to see what kind of temps we are getting non oc?

Run some IntelBurnTest cycles on the "Very High" test setting to get a good baseline temp. Then crank up the multiplier to 42 or so, check for stability and temps with IBT and Prime 95. If that passes, keep going up 1x on the multiplier until you run into a problem. Once you find a problem, back off 1x and recheck stability (for a much longer period of time) OR raise the voltage and check stability again. From that point, you may need to tweak other things like PLL Overvoltage(especially if you are over 4.6 GHz). Once you find the sweet spot, it should be able to pass 50x runs of IBT and 12+ hours of Prime 95 without a problem.

OCing the 2500K is really easy. Really just depends on how fast you want to go and what temps you are willing to put up with.

ran into all kinds of problems gettiing 46 multiplier.

going to chill at 45 and wait for suggestions =p
 
Could just be named differently in your BIOS. Like I have no idea what setting PLL to "Extreme" does on your board, bit it could be the same thing as setting PLL Overvoltage on other board.

Anyway if you are sitting OK at 45x multiplier (which is by no means bad!) and 46x is causing problems, the easiest thing to do is to dial up the CPU voltage a bit (say to 1.375) and re run your tests. If they continue to fail, you could go to to 1.385 or so and see if that fixes it. Most people suggest you don't go over 1.4V thought there isn't a lot of evidence to indicate that chips fry when set to 1.425V or anything like that.

If you get stuck again and want to go faster, might be a good idea to track down other people using the same board and see what there settings are. There is a lot of stuff to adjust, and not much of it makes a big difference for a lot of setups.

it seemed stable. i believe i was running about 77c

but that just seems like such a strange step considering how small the steps were up to this point.

That is how it goes with most of these chips. Once you hit the first road block, it can take a lot of extra voltage (and heat) to make the next step. or you got from adjusting 2 or 3 BIOS settings to adjust 10 or 11 things just to get that last 100 MHz.

If you are using P95 to check stability, make sure you let it run for numerous hours because it switches the size of the test data every 15 minutes.

Wow, 77 seems high for a H100?

Maybe its a bad chip for OC'n...

Maybe try some of the different settings so your not OC the ht and stuff maybe.
 
I had an uncooperative 2500k chip which took in excess of 1.45v to get anything above 4.6Ghz. Temps were about like yours under a H100 as well.
