Leopard, SSD and performance loss

I just grabbed an Intel 80GB G2 drive for my MBP. I've read in a few places that there's no TRIM support, but that you can do a secure erase of the drive to restore lost performance. However, from what I've read, the Disk Utility won't do the trick.

Does anyone have experience with this? If so, what do you do to "restore" lost performance?

Thanks in advance.

If you boot with your Install DVD you should have the ability to run Disk Utility and select "Erase Free Space"

I don't know about Leopard, but Snow Leopard uses doDiscard, which is supposedly a functional equivalent of TRIM. TRIM wasn't ready for implementation by the time Snow Leopard's features were frozen, which is why it's not in there to begin with. It's possible 10.6.3 or beyond could add support, but current developer betas of 10.6.3 don't seem to have any news on the TRIM front.

10.7, if Apple sticks to their release schedule, is due around January of 2011 or so. Consider 10.7 the last resort of TRIM support.

This will do absolutely nothing on SSDs.

I am not sure whether this can even be done on Intel SSDs - I only know of ways to do it on Indilinx-based drives.

I'd ask Intel whether they have a TRIM erase CD or something similar.

I have a macbook with a 64GB vertex ssd. it doesnt support trim and i've been looking for some time for the best way to do this. So far no success.

What I believe to be true is that you must issue a Secure Erase command to the drive. This is not the same as writing all 0's or anything like that. Supposedly this can be done with the Ultimate Boot CD but I cant get it to work on either my macbook or a windows fileserver that I have. The degradation over time for me has been negligible, i attribute it more to the age of the install than the hardware, though i'd still like to get this working.

So if you figure this out let me know too!
