Right, i've got a friend with a P&S that has a 10x optical zoom.

What i'm not sure of, is if he gets a "2x" attachment, would that technically make the camera have 20x zoom or 12x zoom?

yeah... it's would be 20x if it's fully extended. So if he only zoomed in to 6x, the attachmnent would make it 12x.

Technically it would still be a 10x zoom. ;)

This is because the focal-length at the long end is 10x that of the wide end. When you put the 2x convertor on it, it doubles the size of the image, but the long end is still only 10x the length of the short end, although overall you are 2x closer.

But, compared to the widest setting with no 2x convertor, and the longest setting with a 2x convertor, it could pretty much be considered 20x.

Also of note is that exposure will/should be effected by 2 stops. I wouldn't recommend shooting indoors with the 2x convertor on, although outdoors it should work great. Have fun :)
