An acquaintance is choosing between a D70 or Digital Rebel, and has settled on the D70 - though he hasn't bought it yet. But part of the reason is that he was told that Canon lenses are plastic and not glass.

I looked at him and went "WTF????"

But, figured it was possible, so came here to the experts to ask.

They are glass. Both Canon and Nikon have different high end glass, and lower end. For canon "L" is their best version and for nikon their "AF-S" is the high end. Some bodies of the lenses are plastic, but not the actualy lens themselves. So far as the quality on the Rebel Kit lens vs. the D70 Kit lens, D70 blows it away in speed, contrast and sharpness.

LOL -- the kind of misinformation people make $1000 decisions on is sometimes astounding....

im pretty sure my L lenses are most definately not plastic ;)

he should evaluate what his shooting needs are and then choose

choosing a system is very difficult... and then you have to choose a camera, and then lenses... o my

Thanks guys.

I'm HOPING that he just misunderstood. He's on temporary assignment here from Espaňia and he doesn't speak English all that well. Good on the basics, but get technical, and you get a lot of "¿Qué?" No slam, he speaks tons better English than I speak Spanish. :)

I would LIKE to believe the salesman wasn't that underhanded - but I've seen it before. :(

It worries me that he might base a $1,000 decision on second-hand information from [H], too, frankly, though the technical information in this particular subform is generally more reliable than what I hear elsewhere.

BB Gun, if your friend has internet access and the patience to do proper research, there is a ton of good information out there about lens systems that's just a Google away. You might pass along this in depth beginner's guide to Canon lenses, or even just this quick overview of Canon lens types. You won't see any mention of plastic aside from the shell around the barrel.

Check out www.nikonians.org for info on Nikon.
Both companies offer very good products, so I'd suggest to your friend to just pick one and go with it. Oh BTW, nikon is currently offering a $100 rebate for the D70.
