Doing some looking around for a good lens to do Landscape photography with a D5000, any suggestions? The local camera shop suggested:

Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8
as well as another brand that i cant remember off the top of my head, pretty sure that was it, was looking mainly at Super Wide Angle lenses....

I know the guy at the store said one of the lenses had around a 120 deg image(not fish eye)

just wanted to know what you guys suggest for primarily landscape photography

This Tokina is prone to a high CA problems. Personally, I would avoid it and go with the Nikkor 10-24mm instead. You don't really need a /2.8 for landscapes. It's a nice feature, but you won't be using it at this focal length. The range isn't that great either.

Some people do enjoy the Sigma 8-16mm lens (Personally, I don't own any third party lenses). I assume this is the lens the salesmen was talking about, with an angle of view at 114.5° . The Sigma will give you a 2mm advantage, but with the Nikkor you're gaining an extra stop. So it comes down to which one do you value more?

that is the lens exactly :D

is there a different lens type you would suggest ? I am new to photography (my dad is not but still looking for suggestions)

the nikkor one your referring to was also suggested (they did not have one in stock they had sold out due to a sale they had)

You can always buy from http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ It's a great store, and I can highly recommend it.

As for the different lens type suggestions, it really comes down to what do you and your father shoot, what you already own, and last but not least... your budget for the toys. Photography can get really expensive, but you probably already figured that out ;)

ya we know the price can go up, currently a 25-55, and a 55-200 , along those lines IIRC(cannot remember for sure but its around those numbers), just the simple/basic lenses.

Pretty much as i said only landscapes, locally beaches, but on vacations alot more mountains/wildlife.

18-55mm and 55-200mm. ;)

The UWA will be a nice addition to your lens line-up. Should you go with the Sigma or the Nikkor, this is up to you, because you can't really go wrong with either. As i said before, I only buy Nikkor glass and have no personal experiences with nothing buy Nikkor, but from what I know, this Sigma is an attractive lens to many.

Beyond that, it's hard to suggest anything else. The most natural thing for many people in this spot is to pick up the Nikkor 35mm /1.8, but I can't say if this lens is what you really need. Best thing you can do right now, is take pictures. A lot of them, and once you have developed a sense of what you need (shallower depth of field/sharper images/extra reach/etc.) we'll be able to more carefully suggest you a specific lens. Until then, keep shooting!

whats UWA??

sharp images are what we are looking for, but then again that may change...the really wide angle sigma sounds fun, some cases we could have used it......though I figure it will give ALOT of boring pictures.

was just thinking, maybe a telephoto lens may be helpful in some situations(last vacation there were a few times when we were too far for the 200mm lens to get us a very good picture)

UWA - Ultra Wide Angle

More than half of my photos are taken with such a lens, and I don't think of my photography to be boring ;) I'm no Ansel Adams, but I am improving with every shot ;)

Getting more reach is a lot more difficult. I hardly see any difference between the 200mm and 300mm. This is why many people love the 80-400mm type lens. From what I understand, a Nikkor 70-300mm is very popular lens as well, combining a great image quality with that extra reach at a reasonable price. I have no use for anything like that, and also very little experience with telephoto lenses, but IIRC, VictorChan and a few other users have a great experience with such lenses, and would be of more help in here.

ahh, should have figured it out.

400mm is what we were looking at, at the store when we were there.

and by boring i ment more like not much for a focal point(atleast with beginner/recreational photographers)

You might find this lens simulator from Nikon helpful. There is much larger change in the angle of view when changing between smaller wide angle mms (18-16 for example) vs larger telephoto mms (80-78mm).

In regards to the Tokina 11-16mm, here is a thread from the Fredmiranda photography forums about the CA problem and softness, look at the corner issues. I looked at the Tokina 11-16mm when I was looking for wide angle lenses and ultimately steered away from it because it looks like some people get really good ones and others get version that don't live up to the praises. I ended up buying the Nikon 10-24mm.

Have you tried making wider angle photos, by stitching multiple pictures together? Microsoft Live Photo Gallery has a good stiching software built in and there is also Microsoft Image Composite Editor which is much more configurable. Takes a bit more time, but if you don't need the really wide angle that often it might be a good option to try the free software image stiching route first.

Tripod, cable release, flash, quality polarizer (recommend the Marumi Super DHG slim ones)?

DOUBLE RAINBOW! <--Good example of being at the right location at the right time. A wide angle lens would have help capture all of it without panning.

quick question, whats a good place to host ~7mb jpg's for free?

or am i going to have to suck it up and resize em to post em online ?(i know i did a few 150mb plus ones with skydrive but that was a PITA)

Resize and if you want an input on sharpness take a small crop out of it and post it at 100%. You'll end up posting 2 pictures, the resized and the 100% crop.

I recently saw a photographer post a bunch of raw pictures on a publicly viewable folder, but that ended up being Microsoft's skydrive...

hmm ya, figured thats what i would end up with.

For the D5000's resolution whats a good size to resize to? I need to work heavily on my photo editing/tweaking skills so ill be posting a bunch here soon i bet :D

Flickr is pretty good and so is Zenfolio

I think zenfolio has a cost, but its cheap and I think Flickr is free up to a point...

A flickr account may be a good option. Once you upload them there, they'll give you an embed link you can use on the forum. The free account with it's upload limits is not as flexible as image shack(never used this) or having your own hosting for putting up quick image reviews, but would work well for getting your pictures seen and general input on your shots. I don't have much experience with this because I got paid hosting.

An image width of 900 to 1024 is nice for review. Fit most of the window. In your graphics application you'll want to resize to 1024 then apply a slight amount of sharpenning (via Unsharpmask dialogs) because the downsize will make it less sharp.

k, thanks for the advise on that, ill give flickr a go, didnt know i could upload that large of an image, if i'm resizing ill just stick with my image shack account.
