Okay I am getting the Rebel XT. What would be better for general photography with the Rebel XT? The lens kit, the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 XR AF, Sigma 18-125, F3.5-5.6 DC? Any other lens that is better than the lens kit for general overall photography? I prefer something that is not super expensive....

I got the Rebel XT with the 18-55mm lens kit a few weeks ago. Last week I purchased a Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM lens. I like the lens alot. Shop around and read as many reviews as you can find. I ask around on http://www.fredmiranda.com for advice. Most of the people on their know much more than I know. ;) My next lens is going to be a 100mm macro or a 180mm macro. :D

The Tamron is your best bet of the three. It's fast and has a good zoom range.

I have the Tamron 28-105mm. So far, I like it, good all around lens IMO... Feels much better than the "kit" lens. :)

I'm looking into a wideangle & a macro lens soon (Tamron or otherwise). We'll see.... :)

i'd get both

the tamron is really a great lens, especially for the price (and 2.8 throughout the zoom range) , however, 28mm is no where near wide enough.

id get the 18-55 mm kit ( < $80 on fredmiranda forums) and the tamron

how is the 28-105mm II USM for a all around lens? Is this better than the lens kit?

id get the tamron regardless, it has proven itself many many times.

i wouldnt go with a lens that isnt as sharp.

the kit lens is usefull only for the 18mm wide, the quality is not that great at all (compared to the tamron)

You're going to want some kind of wide angle. The body + kit isn't much more than the body alone ($50?), so you might want to just go for it. My roommate just bought the XT + kit because of that.

Although I have not tried one myself, the Tamron 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 has been getting OK reviews. Sounds like it is soft at the far end but that can only be expected with an 11x zoom. Certainly a good starter lens to give you a feel for what focal length you'll use the most.

If you want to go 200mm you might as well save up for L or sigma glass, and do it right the first time.

The tamron is probably your best bet because of the price, and the sharpness and quality throughout the focal range (as well as 2.8 throughout....) it's lightweight for 2.8

the kit lens is a no-brainer to get for the price, like i siad, $60-70-80 for a used or new one on the fm forums for/sale section...def get that for the price and for the wide end (quality is good for the price)

if you want to get length, (200mm, etc) do it right the first time and save up for the sigma 70-200 or the canon 70-200

dont buy something that's going to get you soft photos, you'll probably just end up getting a better telephoto later in the future ... do it right the first time
