Well, I'm dreadfully sorry to give you all the news that I'm going to retiring the majority of my folding farm tonight. My wife & I can no longer deal with the constant circuit blows, heat & A/C issues, etc. I'm going to be contacting a good electrician and a very good HVAC man, and work with them on how best to deal with this whole situation.

I will keep on the forums, asking questions, double checking things people tell me, etc. I was also thinking about doing a workup on how my system/home is setup, and get your guy's advice on how to better set it up. Basically right now, until I can buy my own home, I need to basically start from the ground up with my setup, and see how it goes. Add piece by piece until we're maxed out, and then go from there.

This is so sad, because I had just bought so much stuff with my brother's inheritance, and it looks like I'm not going to. I had really wanted to reach 100k PPD before the Nehalem & Larrabee introduction, and then who knows how far from that point:) But we'll have to see if I can still do that in time. As of Monday, my first priority is a good electrician; the second is a good A/C person.

Sorry to hear man. That stuff is a major problem for alot of us. Do what you have to. Life comes at us hard sometimes. Just keep your head up and keep moving forward.

You know it brother!!! As soon as I can possibly get my machines back on, they will be on and crunching, as well as the new stuff from my brother's inheritance I just recently got & used to purchase hardware to use towards this project. I'm thinking about saving about 1/2 of it till the Nehalem & Larrabee stuff comes out.


 
It does not matter if you have one box or a hundred folding. Your [H]ard because you care enough to try.
That is the spirit of this team. Take care of your family and home first and the rest will work it self out.

When you say retire....... I'm a financial advisor.... It means a different thing to me. (to pull from work with intention of never putting it back to work)

Ah yes, good old Knob and Tube. There I sat one day thinking about a new outlet while sitting up in the porch structure looking where to tap when it hit me.

Got out the dykes (No, not those kind) and started snipping. Bought a few large coils of 14/2 and 12/2 and went nuts for a few days. 1975 was a fun year for sure. Ripping out Horse hair plaster, lathe and all the wonderful stuff that comes with a hundred year old house. Oh yeah, the job is still not totally done;):D

Hey bro (lelliott731) , don't sweat the small stuff (not implying your farm is small or folding is small;)). Please take care of your lovely wife and family before all else. The family always comes first . :D

You probably gave Xilikon a few gray hairs during your last "ramp up" and when you're ready to "ramp" again you'll probably give him some more. :)

As I tried to say above "don't be sorry" because you have nothing to be sorry about, just do the best you can with what you've got and thanks for being a member of the same team as me. Remember, take care of your family first. :D

I feel the same type of pain from the heat issues here.
2 kW/h heat in a small cottage without air-con, so it can get warm in here durring the summer.
Just fold-on on what you can.

Don't worry brother, you are my closest friend here, I am looking forward to many long years of Folding, or whatever else comes next to help solve these horrific diseases that exist. So I will only be down until the second I can come back up, trust me. I am to the point of tears every day I am down.

But no fear, I will be back, and we can have our fun together going back and forth with the competition.

Thank you SOOOOO much for your offer to help, unfortunately I'm in Annapolis, MD, so it's kind of out of the way. I will be posting lots of questions about wiring, voltage, amperage, etc in these forums, so I would love responses if you understand that stuff.

As well as posts about A/C BTU's, etc.

But seriously, thank you SOOOOO much for the offer for the help, which means SOOOO much to me!

No offense alan2308, but points aren't the reward for me. I just want the science to produce something. So until we're done every protein folding simulation, and we've cured Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s Disease, Cancer, AIDS, etc, I won't feel like I've done enough. But thanks for the good spirit!

No problem, bro ;)

If you have questions about wiring, I know enough of it to be able to give a sound answer and toss advices to do it safely. I did a lot of research myself when I worked to improve the wiring of my previous houses (even upgraded one house with aluminium wiring :eek:).

I'm guessing by the time I get all the electricity & wiring done, as well as get a good A/C unit in the room, it's probably going to be a good 3 weeks before I'm going to be going towards the 100k PPD goal.

I don't think you need to get concerned about have the boxen down.

Heck I know in a years time my boxen might be down for at least that long (mostly due to my stupidity) And I'm not re-wiring my house;)

Yeah, but 3 weeks to me is a lifetime. Every work unit we can get in as fast as we can get them in helps out. Between my wife & I, we've had 3 grandparents suffer from Alzheimer’s, an Uncle, Grandfather and Grandmother die from Cancer, and a Aunt struggle with it. So like I keep saying, this is personal to me, it's fun with the points, but I want to kick these diseases ass, period!

I will 100% take you up on that offer. Also, if there is anyone else out there who understands electricity and now that Xilikon has offered, A/C, things like BTU's per square feet, etc, I could REALLY use some advice.

It has been one of the busiest weeks I have had for ages. It is hot here and my systems keep shutting down and my circuits keep blowing. I haven't had time to keep the boxes folding and they changed the clients on me. I just knew when I looked on here that lelliott731 would have passed me by............... We are all in this together. I could feel your breath on my neck but now we are both in the same boat. (Quit breathing on my neck, dang-it!!) Race to see who can get an electrician first? That doesn't even sound like fun. I was going to use you as an excuse to buy more GPU's. The wife is pretty understanding but I thought if I could show her your ramp she would let loose of the purse strings. Now I have to blame Xilikon. Mon Ami. What does Mon Ami mean? Best of luck in getting your problems fixed. It is nice to know we don't struggle alone with these situations. -Mike

Well honestly everyone out there who's offered to help, I could use it. I had a friend who was going to come over to my Condo the other night. He's the primary electrician at the local hospital, but his wife ended up needing to go out of town, and for the past 4 days, I've been dealing with my wife's oral surgery recovery.

Anyway, I basically need to figure out the best way to go. I can't afford to buy a new home, and I think I'm done now with all purchases of new equipment till the late fall / early winter. But I want to get as much of it up and running as possible.

Anyhow, if someone could first explain to me the relationship between AMPs, Watts, Volts, etc. As well as BTU's for A/C units?

Reason being is, I remember Sunin talking about purchasing some hardcore extension cords, so I was thinking about getting a little drill, and drilling a hole in my wall from one room to the other, and pull extension cords from each of the two circuits (I think I have two in that room), to the other room which is a bit bigger, because my brother is going to be leaving to go back to school on Saturday.

So, what I was thinking, if any of you all are willing, I could draw up a little Visio map of my condo, etc, with where I think the circuits are, outlets, etc.

To answer your question Sunin, I hope it's not too long of a plunge for too much longer, but it really depends.

And to MikeMcHugh, sorry I messed up you getting money from your wife for new hardware, trust me, I was using you as an excuse to purchase stuff, so we can be friends:) Needless to say, my wife has been kind enough to let me set up a savings fund for Folding@Home hardware purchases coming up in the future. How cool is that!!!

Anyway, sorry for babbling, much love to all of you for your offers of help, etc. I promise I'll take as many of you as needed to get me back up and running. You guys here are some of my closest friends, and truest, just because I know you don't give a shit about how I look or what issues I have physically, you all are just trying to beat the same diseases I am, and are willing to help out anyone. One easy way to trace which of your breakers runs to which socket, is to use a mains powered radio.

Plug it in and turn it on.
Pull the breaker you think is right.
If the radio stops, you have the correct breaker.
If not, try other breakers untill you find the correct one.

Doing that makes it easy to trace your power circuits single handed.
You can also use a light to do the same trick, but you need to go and see if the light off, whereas useing a radio you can hear when its off.
