Lego Case

haha that is awesome. id be worried about melting plastic though :(

Cool! I want to do that. I really do. Just seems like it would be fragile, or that the heat could loosen the glue.

That looks alright, but the colors just throw me off. The only thing that would prevent me from wanting to do this would be the possible ESD. :(

Being as I have always been a lego fan this is pretty awesome! I thought about doing something like that but melting for just seemed like too much of a possibility.

I made a Lego case for a Mac Mini. I wanted to make it look like a 2X2 Lego brick.

The optical drive is accessible from the slit in the front.

All of the back ports are accessible.

The back slides up on "rails".

The Mini fits very well and can only move a little from side to side.

Since the bottom is open and the case sits on feet, the Mini can get plenty of air.

It's still a work in progress. It's missing a few bricks, and I am probably going to change the way the Mini sits in the case. I'm also going to change the top from gray to blue so it looks more like a giant Lego.

i think most legos are fairly heat-resistant, though i wouldn't put a lego brick into direct contact with a an IHS or anything. if you use heat-resistant glue, you should be fine.

this is the second lego case i've seen now. i love the idea, but in both examples i'm left with a feeling of, "well, it's a solid proof of concept. you made a lego case. but it doesn't look very attractive as either a case or a lego construction."

i think it'd be really awesome to start with a barebones metal case frame and build a lego case around or onto that--but actually make it look like a lego space base or something (the 1980's Blacktron II set would be my first choice).

..perhaps another case. i haven't even started anything on my current one.

edit: though the one posted by Kurn does look good as a case, for the record.

I agree on both - the blue Mac mini is cute but the linked Lego machine lacked something. It looks like a PC wrapped in Lego rather than a cool Lego PC.

However, I confess I can't offer any practical suggestions - I'm not a Lego artist. Either get a 6 year old on board or a Lego nerd, but it should look like cool Lego. A multi-coloured Lego house or a hi-tech Lego space station or robot would be better.

you mean there's a difference between lego nerds and computer nerds? :D the biggest problem i see with trying to stick to a theme with legos as building material is cost. new sets kinda suck; they emphasize looks to the point that lego's using a whole lot of large, custom pieces that require little to no assembly. where's the fun in that? the old sets can be had on places like ebay, and there are actually lego enthusiast sites that sell OOP sets as well as individual pieces (bricklink).

i'd thought about trying to build a lego case before i'd even found [H]. my original idea was to start with a mid-tower and remove all the outside panels, leaving only the bays, MB tray, back and bottom sides. glue a plate to the bottom, and start building. i was thinking this could end up looking like a sky-scraper type building (in lego scale). but after seeing so many crazy mods here and elsewhere, i know i could do better (if i spent the money anyway).

My only concern is that it would be hard to access the computer parts should anything fail or you want to install something.

lego also has lots of hinged pieces, so if one had enough ingenuity, it could actually be easier to get into a lego case than a normal one (in other words, you could put a 'door' almost anywhere you wanted).

that is very cool, i like this project, i did this once but it was very half-monkey'd

good work on that computer winston.
