my rig is in my sig, do you think if i go up to 4gb that would be enough to run it smoothly at max? if not, what if i do that and upgrade the proc, but keep the mobo. tips?
 
I think replacing that ancient video card would be a good first step.

Seriously, my FPS would dip down into the lower teens in L4D and TF2 with an athlon x2 @ 2.2ghz with 2 gigs of ram. E8400 fixed that mess.

Not much you can do with a S939 motherboard.

An AMD X2 CPU (4000+ or higher) matched with a new videocard (8800GT, HD 3870) is your only hope.
 
Just turn it all down and have fun, you'll be freaking out too much to care how good things look.
 
he doesnt state which system it is though since theres 2 in his sig.. but if its the p4 hes screwed theres no possible way that 9800 pro can play L4D.. if its the 3000+ he could possibly play the game with the 7800GTX if he overclocked the processor.. since the 3000+ should easily be overclockable to 2.5-2.7ghz which would then give him a little more headroom on the cpu limits.. to atleast turn some of the settings down..

just make sure you have AA turned off since by default i believe it turns it on..

and if it is the 3000+ throw another gig of ram in that thing.. should help out a little.. because theres no possible way you can play any modern game with 512mb of ram..

and what resolution are you playing at?
 
He will be CPU limited at 2560x1600, the source engine really is that bad on the CPU.
 
I would not add a single dollar to that machine with how old it is, not even memory. Save money and buy a new machine.
