just got a new gaming pc, and i want to switch my old one to linux. mainly, i'll just use it for surfing, downloading, and burning cds. i need help choosing a distro, im thinking of using suse 9.1 personal, but if you know of something better, let me know.

here are the specs of the machine:

amd 3200+
dfi lanparty nfII ultraB
1gb pc3200
radeon 9800pro or gf ti4600 (whichever has better driver support)
160gb sata hdd

is sata fully supported in linux? what about nforce2?

Get the geforce. SATA is supported in new kernels (and slightly older BSDs).
I use a nForce2-based card daily in FreeBSD, so I'd imagine it works in linux.

ditto on the nvidia graphics card...

the only bad thing i've head about nforce2 motherboards is the on-board nic requires nvidia drivers (no first hand knowledge).

sata should be in suse 9.1 ... it's a great distro.

I got the onboard nic working fine in gentoo, just have to select an extra option when compiling the kernel.

As of the 2.6 the onboard ethernet works with forcedeth kernel driver. I've been using since 2.4.6-love or something like that. Never had any problem with it.
