I want to conect 5 LED's in series and power them on batteries.each LED is 3.5v

the question is do i need multiple batteries to power all of them or only one battery on 3-4v
 
To run them in series you would need multiple batteries
3.5v * 5 = 17.5v
17.5v / 1.5v ~~ 12(1.5v Batteries)
If you go for Parallel you will need less. At least 3 to get above the rated voltage of the LEDs 4.5v.
But in both cases you will need a resistor to not kill the LED so make sure you think it all out before getting it done.

Personally I'd go parallel with what ever you are planning. Keep in mind though that the LEDs will be pulling a good amount of current so check and see how long you want these to last. It will be the determining factor if you use 3 batteries or say 6 batteries in a 3X2 parallel array. I'm assuming the batteries are 1.5v but it may be different.

[Rereading the OP]
One 3.5v to 4v battery would power the LEDs. Just make sure you put them in a parallel series and to have a resistor to limit the current draw from the battery.
