I read an article about a NEC flat panel about a year ago that used LEDs in the backlight of the LCD panel, which promised much greater color accuracy. However the price tag on a 21" unit was about $6 500.

I haven't heard anything about this technology since and was wondering if there have been any new advances with respect to these panels, and if prices have dropped much.

wow that looks good!

Maybe they havent been able to get the full spread of frequencies for the colour spectrum.
As far as I know, LEDs cant do this as well as metal halide lamps for example, but with new advancements, who knows.
Organic LEDs (OLEDS) are an upcoming technology worth keeping an eye on, currently used in very small displays.
Full spectrum LEDs exist but they are probably not good enough for a colour correct display.

I'm interested in using an array of hybrid power LEDs for a projector.
It would need to project light forward more like a laser rather than an arc.
Perhaps this was another problem with the NEC display?

The monitor you are talking about is the NEC LCD2180WG-LED. The unit still costs around $6000 since no one else has released one.

The LED covers 107% of the adobe color spectrum.

I have talked to product management about possible upcoming price drops but it does not look like there is anything coming up. Japan is currently working on developing a similar unit that is smaller and less expensive but I have not heard anything beyond that,.

NEC will have a 26 inch wide unit coming out soon that covers 92% of the adobe color gamut with an A-TW-IPS panel.

WOW impressive it has perfect colors and gamut
I want one :p

This result is completely logical compared to the gamut measured. The entire ISO Fogra27 space is of course included in the monitor gamut, except a couple of cyan shades (96%). This is a record. Ok, the monitor price might seem exorbitant, but not all graphic designers will need such a monitor and this price could be justified for some who could gain some time rather than having to correct some colors afterwards. Nevertheless, we can still hope that there will be price cuts.
