Is there much word on desktop LCDs coming out with LED backlighting? My Dell Studio 15 has it and it's just... so ridiculously bright in a good way. I can see and read it in sunlight and it helps the clarity of the screen as well.

The only retail product I've actually seen is a $2000 HP LCD on newegg. :\ That can't be the only one with how LED laptop panels are becoming so popular.

There was just a deal the other day for Dell's G2410 and G2210 LCDs that are LED-backlit, though reviews in terms of brightness benefits due to its LED backlighting is somewhat lukewarm, so I don't think those would be the monitors you would go for.

Not to mention they're TN panels, but that's another argument altogether. ;)

Are we talking LED backlight or edge lit LED backlight like some of the new TVs?

I would kill someone with my bare hands for an ambilight monitor. Those tvs don't have the greatest bright/contrast or colors, and the built in speakers suck, but the ambilight is the single most compelling feature a TV could possibly have for me. Eyestrain is reduced to 0 and every single type of media is greatly enhanced, especially movies and games.

I'm aware of the ambx system, but it's a bastard child. It doesn't react automatically to everything like ambilight does, unless you're using a game specifically programmed for ambx. I was still thinking about getting the wall washer just because you can do some cool stuff with it and it's cheap.

Er, that's not what edge-lit means. But yes that is a nice feature, I put a fluorescent full-spectrum lamp behind my screen and point it at the wall but it's not nearly the same.
