LED backlit monitors overpriced?

So obviously Apple stirred some things up when they released their LED backlit 24" monitor. Obviously Apple makes money on every product they sell. They would never pull a Sony and loose money betting on that they make it back with other sales.

So my question is, why are all the other LED backlit monitors still in the stratosphere? I sent an E-mail to Samsung PR to ask about the XL24 pricing - but they haven't gotten back to me yet.

I'm looking for a decent monitor for under $1,000. I really do not need color calibrations or anything. Wide Gamut is fine.

I really like the Dell 2709WFP but the company I am required to order IT equipment through doesn't play well with Dell - at all. I would give up the 3" of screen size for the XL24 - but honestly $2,200 is just beyond ridiculous.

What advantage do you expect from XL24?

The same "WOW!" I had when I replaced my 17" MBP with the CCFL LCD with a new 17" MBP with the LED LCD. But when I plugged my MBP into my 24" Samsung 245T the difference was extraordinary. The LED LCD colors are bright, the contrast & blacks rivals most plasmas.

But, why is Apple selling it for $899 when the XL24 is three times the price. I'm fairly sure Samsung makes the panel that the Apple monitor uses. With the exception of the power cable for the MBP & the Displayport - There is really no difference. Problem is, my MBP doesn't have DisplayPort - so I can't get the Apple display without buying the latest 17" MBP.

Obviously if Apple of all companies is switching everything to LED at the same price point as CCFL and their profit margin actually rose then obviously it doesn't cost anywhere near $800 for the panel. So, short of strapping a nuclear reactor or using 24k gold for the casing - there is no reason that a 24" LED LCD should cost more than $1,000 let alone $2,000+.

Obviously these are grossly overpriced and if people actually gave a crap and started criticizing the manufacturers - then prices will fall and lower prices are good.

And the 24" ACD is using an H-IPS panel to boot... obviously not made by Samsung.

Though that Samsung is PVA, it looks like a pretty serious setup. It even comes with calibration tools and allows for the display to be directly calibrated.

The ACD has no intelligence. It is simply just a display with speakers, mic, web cam.

Sorry to say, LED backlight is the last thing that improves image quality.

Look through this thread.

XL24 has a regular PVA panel with colorshift. Also it has half-calibratable LUT and includes samsung's color managament package designed for XL.
Do you need that? You pay extra fee for that and for "innovation".
For its price you can get NEC 2490UXI-SV or NEC 2690WUXi2-SV (both are 2 times better than XL) and PS3.

I'm not getting it. My hardware vendor is getting me a quote for a Dell 2709W even though Dell doesn't play nice with 3rd party vendors. i'll pass along the NEC 2690.

New technology = $$$.
So yeah, LED backlit LCDs are overpriced.
LED will become mainstream in 2 years and price will go down.
Patience my friends.

LED really only gets exciting when it's associated with the words "local dimming..."

I have one of the new Apple LED Cinema Displays, and though it's really stunning in a lot of ways, I can vouch that LED backlighting has done nothing to improve uniformity or backlight bleeding - I've been through three of them with those issues.

guess i wont be holding out for a led monitor then.

I've seen the issues that you've been through on at least a couple of different forums. My experiences have been completely 180 degrees opposite. I bought one and it's perfect. It's easily the nicest monitor that I have ever used. I haven't seen backlight uniformity that is this perfect.

As far as backlight bleed, I don't really see why LED would be any better than CCFL though. Mine has no issues in this regard, but I don't see anything specific to LED technology that would make it any different.

When the LED was in it's early hype-phase it was touted to be cheaper to manufacture. Although that might be the case, it still cost a lot of time and money to get production up and running. Therefor you start small, and it doesn't really make sense to pioneer this on ultra-cheap monitors with very low margins. So it's quite natural that LED mostly have been used on expensive monitors.

And laptop screens, but thats mainly due to their small size and low power consumption more than anything else.

My plan was to buy a LED 24" display at the end of 2005 / beginning of 2006 :)

Hopefully my 2490wuxi will last until a good 24-30" OLED screen comes out. I can't wait for the black/white contrast on those.

I'd have to agree, maybe it’s just that wonderful placebo effect but damn

Also LED screens are becoming pretty standard in the laptop field, at least browsing through Dell's laptop selections.

Are you using your Apple LED Display on a desktop Computer? I heard that the new Apple LED display currently only work on mac books which sucks for the rest of us. I'm very interested in purchasing the new Apple LED Display because my dad owns an Imac and the picture quality on the display is superb, even better then my Nec 2490.

I have one of the new Unibody Macbook Pros, so I'm using it with that. I feel pretty lucky to have one, because after all the research I've done here, I honestly believe that the LED ACD is the best monitor on the market for under $1000. (That's honestly not too hard to pull off though since sRGB IPS panels are apparently pretty much nonexistent, but still.) Even with my uniformity issues, I don't think I'd exchange it for anything else other than the fabled NEC.

Your best hope is probably getting a graphics card with a DisplayPort connection, then hoping and praying that a mini Display Port to Display Port adapter comes out. That's personally my plan for using this monitor with any future computers.

OLED truly looks like a true succesor to CRT in terms of contrast and color fidelity, but I'm sure the initial price will scare off most.

I remember the 11" sony OLED screen going for like 2k. This was the first commercial product though - hopefully in 5 years the size will be up and the price down. I wouldn't mind early adopting the tech for 24" @ 1250 USD

My traditionally backlit Samsung developed uniformity issues with the backlighting, once the display became broken in. (Original panel and its replacement did the same exact thing, so I decided to accept it as a "feature" or a minor annoyance I could live with anyway...)

I would hope LED would be more stable and allow for better uniformity at least in terms of the backlighting itself...

The wikipedia article on LED backlighting notes that LEDs could age at different rates, causing the whitepoint of the display to shift over time. I suppose I'll let you guys know if that's true in a year or two.

You said you don't need color calibration ect, indicating you are not doing professional video work.

In which case buying a monitor over a grand is pretty insane. I would get a small screen for reg computer work and a big 1080P screen for gaming, or just get a nice big cheap TN (some of them like my benq g2400wd are quite nice) and find something better to spend 1700 bucks on lol.
