Leaving on an external HD? Safe?

Is it safe to leave an external hard drive powered on for extended periods of time? Should I turn it off when I'm not using it or can it be left on all the time, like the computer?

Depends on the type of enclosure, some have better cooling than others, but in short if your not using it turn it off and when you need to, turn it on.
