We talked about OpenAI Five about a month ago and how five neural networks were being used to train its AI systems to play Dota 2. That same code base is being used to train robots. We are fairly sure that Finger Pivoting, Sliding, and Finger Gaiting will help train these robots to better latch onto your trachea for sure.

We’ve trained a human-like robot hand to manipulate physical objects with unprecedented dexterity. Our system, called Dactyl, is trained entirely in simulation and transfers its knowledge to reality, adapting to real-world physics using techniques we’ve been working on for the past year. Dactyl learns from scratch using the same general-purpose reinforcement learning algorithm and code as OpenAI Five. Our results show that it’s possible to train agents in simulation and have them solve real-world tasks, without physically-accurate modeling of the world.

No really it could be useful in the management of so many urologic conditions. Precise measurements of the amount and type of penile/clitoral stimulation for orgasm could allow us to put a number on the degree of sexual dysfunction suffered by so many. Prostate exams could be done reliably and reproducibly to give an accurate exam and maybe even allow early diagnosis of cancer. It gives new meaning to the idea of a ‘digital rectal exam’. Prostatic massage for prostatic is can be done in a controlled, graded and reproducible fashion.

A smaller hand could be used for probing of smaller orifices.

We live in amazing times when we can ape biological structures with metal, plastic and silicon. But why stop at 5 fingers?

How bout a 12 fingered hand to play some awesome Led Zeppelin? I can’t wait for the prostheses that will allow people to literally have three hands or other additional appendages.

I would be impressed. Except I keep seeing one robot that talks ans show emotions. Another that can jump objects, yet another that hold conversations and so forth. I will be completely impressed when someone puts all these things together.
