Learning box at work

I'll reference this thread - http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1444317 - because it's very similar to what I want to do....

I'm not trying to make a big splash regarding spending money at my place of employment due to the obvious spree of cutting back but I have been given the okay to go ahead and get a development box to learn on - so I don't break the live environment! Few XP clients, win2003 / 2008 server, untangle. - ad / dns / dhcp / wsus --and also learning to understand and setup RAIDs.

I can get a 2x quad core AMD setup (dell PE 2970) for cheaper than a single quad Intel setup... is there any problem going AMD with this build rather than Intel?

I'm trying to stay shy of $2000...

what is the target virtualization platform? make sure to check the HCL for whatever software you're using. There's no problem going AMD, as long as the CPUs you're using don't have the TLB errata bug present.

Ah, I'm sorry. I knew I was forgetting something. I'm planning on using ESXi. Am I correct in understanding that it won't need a host os, and that it actually is the host / link between hardware?
