Leak testing questions

Hey guys. The rest of my parts are arriving in a few days, then I'm all set for my 1st loop.

Parts are as follows:

Mcp 655 pump
Apogee Cpu Block
Mcr220 Rad
T-line Res.

I'm planning on running the loop outside of the case for 12 hrs to test for leaks. But would it be fairly safe to only run it for a few hrs inside the case afterwards? I'm using feser 1 cooling fluid which is supposed to be non-conductive (until it mixes with the metals in loop for a while apparently.

I think it will be pretty safe to do this, but I'm wondering what kind of leaks would be possible. Or what kind of problems you guys have encountered after a decent amount of time leak testing?
 
First of all ... congrats on your first water setup. And, good for you for planning your leak testing - too many people skip this step and are sorry afterwards.

Once you've completed your leak testing outside the case, you will most likely be okay with running your leak testing with everything mounted inside the case for a few hours. Just watch it closely. What I generally do is place paper towels under all the potential leak areas and let it run overnight, but admit I have tested for shorter time periods.

If you are good after a few hours, you will probably be fine, as long as you have clamps on your tubing and nothing can work its way out of position.

Note that the Feser One coolant may help a bit if you spill some on your mobo, but it's not going to be a lifesaver if you have a major leak. The 'Non-Conductivity" of these fluids is something that is highly debated (I'm running Feser One, but for the color, not the lack of conductivity). So, just take the precautions you are planning and you should be fine.

Yeah, I bought the feser for the coloring also. Should help to spot any leaks if they occur. I'll post up some pics when I get it together.
 
It's not that the Feser fluid is non-conductive, heck Distilled Water is non-conductive. What will get you with a leak of any fluid is that the dust on your motherboard and other components is conductive.

i still recommend using the paper clip method the first time you turn on the pump in the case. sure testing it out of the case will make sure the o-rings in the blocks dont leak and your fittings are tight. but then you take everything apart and put it back together and all your hoses are possibly not tight again. and theyre the most likely to leak out of everything in the loop. so put it all together with the components in the case, and then unplug everything except the pump. put a paperclip in the motherboard power cord between any black wire and the green wire. this way you can run your pump, but everything else will be off. if you get a leak, it wont mess anything up as long as you clean the part before turning it on. once you make sure nothing leaks, plug it all back in and youre good to go.
 
Yeh I think im going to assemble to whole loop roughly in place. Then pull it out and make sure everything doesn't leak for a few hours. Then I'll probably leave it on overnight in the case with the psu jumped, pump only running. With lots of paper towels of course. I hope to only assemble it once but we'll see how that goes.
 
Parts came earlier than expected!

Bleeding/Leaktesting right now. Turns out the apogee block I bought is the lga775 model, but I made a bracket out of 1/4" acrylic. No leaks at all so far.

Im a little worried about the durability of the acrylic, with the springs clamped down on it, it has about a 1/8" bow in 4". I plan on making another bracket from 1/16" steel for peace of mind.
 
Went great, no leaks, was pretty simple to install. Im going to re-do some parts of the loop (i.e. t-line). But overall it took around 2 hrs to bleed.

This is absolutely correct. The fluids may be nonconductive while in the loop, but ANY contaminant (on the motherboard, like RR said, or in the air) will make the fluid conductive. So the best thing to do, as stated by others, is to leak test extensively to prevent leaks, rather than hoping the fluid you select won't short anything out if there is a leak.

Personally, I like to leak test with everything installed in the case so that the tubing/barbs/clamps are stressed the way they will be all the time, rather than more relaxed when they are out of the case where the tubing doesn't have to bend as tightly. This can make cleaning any potential leaks a bit more of a pain, but I've done this with the loops I've set up and if done properly (and you don't have any faulty equipment) you won't see leaks.
