So, the other day, one of my friends showed me BF2. Impressive. I downloaded the demo and played it on my notebook. It ran OK on my Xpress200m system at minimum everything. So, I got to thinking. Why not just take the hardware from my old DAW(XP2100), slap in a new vid card and make a gaming box. So, I ordered a 6800LE off Newegg when it was $129. Couldn't resist.
I figured, I don't want to get too crazy since AGP is on the way out. Little did I realize that it would open up to 16 pipelines and 5 vertex shaders. Then, I OCed it to 360/850. Totally stable in BF2, no artifacting in either BF2 or 3Dmark05
But, here's the problem. I pull 3455 3dmarks in 05 with my AXP2100, ECS L7S7A2, 1.5GB RAM(2x512 Corsair Value 3200@133, 1x512 Kingston Value 2700@133). I have a feeling something is wrong with my system. Right now, I theorize that it's my crappy mobo and/or the extra latencies caused by the off-chip memory controller.
Even overclocking the processor is an exercise in futility. I ramp it up to 300mhz over stock and get like 50 more 3dmarks.
I'm thinking I just need to go and get on board with an A64, but I just want to make sure that there's no silver bullet that I'm missing. I ran driver cleaner, and that nearly doubled my score. I installed the latest AGP driver. I'm just thinking that it's time to get something a little more modern to let this card breathe.
I'm not looking for max 3Dmarks, but the real impetus here is that I've been rocking a pair of 15" CRTs and would like to replace them with something nicer. Now that I know I have a card that can do pretty well, I'd like to be able to game at a higher resolution. Basically on larger LCDs at native.
