I just switched from 6800 GT to 6800 Ultra (Winfast A400 GT TDH to Winfast A400 Ultra TDH by Leadtek). I don't know if that was a smart move, but I had an opportunity, as it didn't cost me too much (trade an old case + PSU as a difference and gave the 6800 GT back to the store).
Both cards have the same huge copper cooling solution and the only noticeable difference is in the additional power connector. Connected two separate power cords from the PSU and there you go... The performance gain isn't too high, as the CPU could restrain the video card to unleash its full potential.
Here's my rig: P4 2.8 GHz Northwood HT enabled, 800 MHz FSB, coooled by a Zalman AL-CU 7000 CNPS cooler, Asus P4P800 motherboard, Leadtek Winfast A400 Ultra TDH (400/1100), 1 Gb of Corsair TwinX3200C2PT XMS memory, Asus CD-RW 48X, Maxtor HDD 80 Gb, 7.200 rpm, Thermaltake Xaser III Lanfire VM2000A, with 4 fans Hardcano-controlled, Thermaltake Silent Pure Power 480 W PSU, Samsung 757NF monitor; Windows XP Pro SP1, DX 9b, ForceWare 61.77.
Last night I ran some Doom 3 on 1024x768, HQ settings, Vsync on, 4xAA with a constant framerate of 60 fps (very low variations). The room temp was in the 26 to 27 Celsius range.
The idle temp of the video card (core) was 55 and slowly (but constantly) rose to 60 after booting. I gave it 4 or 5 Aquamark benchmarks and the temperature rose to 72 C degrees. Let it rest for a few minutes and the core temp got down to 62-63 C degrees but not lower. Then I gave it some D3 timedemos and the core temp didn’t raise above 73 to 74 Celsius (I ran D3 in a window and kept the nV control panel aside, to be able to monitor the temps all the time). And lastly, I loaded the last save (Enpro plant facility, towards the end of the level) and started gunning those ugly faces. The temps began to raise to 76-77 and after 20 minutes of playing, they set on 78-79 degrees Celsius. Nothing less, nothing more. I increased the speed of the four case fans, but I didn’t notice any change in the core temp while in game. I have a good airflow in my case. Upon turning off my computer (about 2 AM) to get some sleep, the room temp was definitely higher with 2 or maybe 3 degrees. These GPUs surely run hot, hotter than ever. Talk about global warming lol!
And these are the temps at stock speed, not o/c. Do you think some AS5 may help dropping a few degrees?
What’s your 6800 Ultra core temperature after some 3d gaming? If you really want to know how hot they get, I suggest to do what I just did: i.e. open the nVidia control panel (Temperature settings), let it on the desktop and run Doom 3 in a window; just make sure the D3 window doesn’t cover the nV CPL entirely, so you can watch the temperature all the time.
