I know this has probably been done before, but I want my own thread gawsh darnit!

Ok, so I have a dell 2005fpw, and I loved it when I got it...

however, the other day I took my rig over to a friends and was forced to use his 19" CRT.

I only dropped my resolution from 1360x1050 (or whatever) to 1240x1024 and the difference was astounding....

In BF2 I could turn with complete clarity... it was like a whole new ballgame.... it was like putting on glasses for the first time. Now, I know what ghosting looks like, and while the dell 2005fpw hardly ghosts at all, it is very obvious next to a 19" CRT.

So, and feel free to tell me my monitor is jacked or something, but i'd rather hear about some good cheap CRT's.... or, even prefereably, an LCD with a better refresh time than the 2005fpw becuase its really sort of getting to me a little bit.

$350 for a monitor, that is great, don't get me wrong, but when it comes to games, you are sort of getting the short end of the stick... spend all that cash on a cpu and vid card, and then your monitor becomes a bottleneck in games?

Is the refresh on the 2005fpw bad? What is a refresh time in which you wouldn't be able to tell a difference between a LCD and a CRT? I personally don't think that will ever exist from what I saw last weekend.

Wow.....I thought whenever someone went LCD they never went back to CRT, LOL. You are to report immediately to LCD Lemming Headquarters for reprogramming. We can't have this kind of thing going on.

But , seriously, I have both so I know what you mean by ghosting. It happens and there is nothing you can do unless you want to sacrifice image quality for speed. Fortunately CRTs are beginning to trickle back to Newegg and other such e-tailers but you'll pay up the kazoo.

The only thing I really miss about CRTs are their true blacks. LCD has come a long way, but it still falls short in that area. Ghosting isn't bad if you get an LCD that can maintain a fairly even response time. I rarely see it on my ViewSonic VP930b.

CRTs are still better for gaming. It's just too bad that the quality of them went to crap over the last 4-5 years.

so whats a guy supposed to do?

whats the biggest monitor they make (CRT wise) that isn't a peice o' ?

If you were going to stick with a CRT, I would recommend a 22inch NEC. I have a 21" nec that is older then me, I'm 20, and it still kicks ass at 1248x1024(Only has a 60hz refresh rate though). Personally I'm going to be buying a 24inch widescreen acer next week, enless my continued research points to something else. My next upgrade isn't going to be untill SED/OLED.

NECs are nice if you can hunt down one of the good AG ones. I'm not sure if the nice models are still being made, but they were the last to still be in production. Overall NEC is probably my second-favorite brand. Sony's damn close, but the color on the NECs I've used just seemed a little better and other than that there's little to differentiate them by. My personal favorite brand was Hitachi. People may think I'm nuts for preferring shadow mask, but my Hitachi is just simply sharper than any of the Sony & NEC aperture grilles I've seen. Maybe an Eizo could beat it, but man those things were $$$$. I find a Hitachi shadow mask to be the best compromise between the sharpness of an LCD and the black levels & speed of a CRT. Unlike the cheap shadow mask screens you can buy these days, they were also truely flat. My personal favorite monitor is a Sony 24" widescreen though. It's quite possibly the best gaming monitor ever made. 2304x1440@80Hz, or 1920x1200@90Hz. The catch is they weigh 92.6 lbs. NEC & Hitachi never made the "behemoth" size CRTs.
Sony & Hitachi have been out of the business a while now. Finding a used Hitachi is a bitch. You can easily get a nice Sony or NEC used though, and some new ones may still be floating around, particularly new NECs. eBay, Merkortech.com has a bunch (never bought from them though), and other places.

My CRT is a NEC fe2111sb and it pounds my Sammy 215tw in everything except text reading. Unfortunately I do alot of that so I simply couldn't keep it as my primary monitor.
