Just curious about something my dad has a LCD TV panasonic with direct tv and he is just using a Regular normal cable tv type of cable to go from the direct tv box to the tv.. Now If we got a pair of Component cables and went from the back of the direct tv box to the TV, would we need that other regular cable and would this improve picture?

If you're watching "regular" channels with DirecTV you might see a little improvement switching to component video - it's slightly better than svideo, and definitely better than composite or coax at SDTV.

HDTV doesnt work over composite or svideo, so if you have an HDTV capable receiver you definitely want to upgrade to component cables, this is where you will se a big improvement.

If you use a component cable, you do not need the old cable for video, but chances are the cable is also carrying audio and you may still need that, depending on how you are setup in terms of a receiver and seperate audio cables etc.
