Hello.
I wanna buy an lcd TV 42" full HD ( 1920 x 1080 ),and i have a few questions about resolutions when i stick it on my pc.
My graphic card is GTX 285. Which resolution will be displayed on my windows ?
1920 x 1080? 1600 x 1200 ? Or less ??
What about pc games ,on the TV ? If i play the latest games ( 2008-2009 ,for example ) could i get the max resolution 1920 x 1080 ?
Please help me guys,i don't have a clue about that kind of stuff.
Thanks in advance.

The resolution, especially with this video card is all dependent on the monitor. With the 285 you will be able to run pretty much every resolution up to and including 2560x1600. So basically, whatever your TV or monitor support, that gtx 285 will allow you to run.

I'm affraid i didn't understand your idea. So,if the monitor has 1920 x 1080 ,could i get 1920 x 1080 ,on the TV ,in windows XP / Vista ...or whatever ?
And what about the pc games ?
Thanks.

Some TVs have non-defeatable image/line enhancement applied to signals coming from HDMI. This can cause issues with text sharpness as an example.

Most HDTVs have multiple resolutions these days. Refer to your TV's manual for a list of supported resolutions (if you have not yet purchased your TV, use the online manual on the manufacturer's website).

In order to use your computer on your HDTV, you will need to output a resolution to the TV that it supports. I would suggest using the TV's native resolution (for example, you buy a 1080p TV, set your computer to output 1080p).

In other words, you can set your desktop resolution (or Window's resolution) to 1920x1080. If you decide to play a game, go into the options menu and select 1920x1080 as your resolution (or lower if you want, but it will look worse).

Is that basically your question?

For all intents and purposes you may as well consider it just a monitor. Your video card will treat it as such. That particular video card (and most) support all of the resolutions that screen is capable of. You wont be missing out on anything so long as, like someone else said, there is no image filtering done inside the TV that would make text hard to read.

Also, the video card can scale whatever resolution up to full screen on the TV. No worries. It will be just like a normal monitor.

Okay guys, thanks a lot for your help.
But let me tell you what i did 2-3 days ago : i connected my pc to a 37" lcd tv hd ready, max resolution 1366 x 768. I tried everything possible to get the max tv resolution, but more than 1280 x 768 i couldn't get out. WHY ?
And today before i posted this thread i was reading on a german website something about LCD TV's ,and they said that NOT EVERY FULL HD LCD TV WITH 1920 X 1080 could have this resolutions,on PC's ...BELIEVE IT OR NOT ( something like that,i can't translate 100 % )
And then, they adviced the customers to check the " PC native resolution, for the TV,before purchasing".
I am really confused now. I wanted to go for http://www.testfreaks.co.uk/tvs/lg-42lh4000/
but i have no clue if this TV will display 1920 x 1080 ,when i stick my PC.
Where do i have to check that ? Please help how to proceed to find out, before i purchase a TV.

They might be referring to overscan or maybe the TV can not pixel map at a 1:1 ratio?

With modern LCD TVs and modern GPUs, I don't see this as much of an issue, but it is a good idea to make sure you have 1:1 pixel mapping.

I prefer Samsung, I happen to like the glossy screens.

I would recommend the LN40B650 (or A650) or the LN40B750.

Heres my 2 cents since Im running the below rig with a 32" Sharp LCD TV at 1920x1080.

As far as LCD TVs as monitors, I love it. Most Tvs now can handle multi res. I can recommend Sharp and Samsung, both great quality TVs, they looks sharp, and picture is sharp. As yes they support 1:1 or dot by dot config. Take a look at the Sharp Aquos models.

As far as gaming, the text and picture is amazing. Love it. Most friends that are over are amazed at the quality and some want the TV that I have just for it too.

The main reason I wanted a TV as a monitor was for 2 reasons, the kill 2 birds with one stone: 1. having a big monitor/TV with 2) a tuner inside. I can do whatever i want on the PC then push of a button I can watch cable TV. Worked at very well for me.

Hopefully it helped in making a decision...

My 2006 40" Bravia XBR3 has 1:1 Pixel Mapping. I'd be shocked if 2009 TVs don't have 1:1. Or at least the good ones anyway.

I'm so glad I went with a 1080p TV instead of a 720p TV. All that talk about 1080p "not being worth it"...most folks probably don't use their TV with their PC. I'm also using a GTX 285 and game just fine at 1920 x 1080 60hz. You should not have any issues with that graphics card and any decent HDTV on HDMI or VGA.

Thanks, 616.
Now,the last question about TV's connected on PC : is it worth or not,to get 100 Hz ?
Do you see any difference on 100 Hz --> pc games ?I DON'T ASK ABOUT FAST ACTION MOVIES OR SPORT CHANNELS.
My graphic card has only 2 DVI outputs,no HDMI. Is that okay ?Do i have to use a VGA cable (with DVI adapter) ,if the TV doesen't have DVI input ?
Please tell me which is the best solution to connect my PC on the TV,in that case.
Thanks .

As far as I know, all of the current HDTVs (with the exception of Mitsubishi) claiming 120hz capability do not actually accept a 120hz signal, they simply take a 60hz signal and then use an internal processor to create 60 extra "fake" frames that are inserted in between each "real" frame (frames that are actually generated by the source, ie. the PC). Also, most HDTVs have a significant amount of input lag, which makes them unsuitable for fast paced games like Quake, CoD4, and the like.

I highly reccommend you look at the LG 42LH30. I'm using it as my a monitor and everything has been perfect. You can turn edge enhancement off and there is no overscan. There is only a VGA port for dedicated PC use but I use a HDMI port and relabel it to 'PC' and it has worked perfectly for me. Everything looks crisp and clear and as a bonus there is low input lag of about 30ms. This thread is what got me to buy it.

And works for me...

(And using a TV better exploits LCD's one compelling advantage to me -- size...)
