Which produces the best picture quality... An LCD TV or Plasma TV?

If there is anything that looks better then a plasma I haven't seen it. I personally recommend Panasonic but the Pioneers would be a very very close second.

Plasma TV but be wary that they reach half brightness at about 10 years.

Both LCD's and plasma's are rated at 60,000 hours. The old problems with plasma life span is not an issue anymore with the new generation models. If you have it on 8 hours a day it will be fine for 20 years.

what about samsung lcd's?

The main issues I hear with Samsung's is their DNIe technology. It's been known to washout blacks in certain scenes. Now if you could turn it off no big deal but Samsung doesn't give you that option. When I played with it at the store it looked fine to me but I never had a chance to play something like Sin City or Batman Begins to really test it.

Even if this was 100% true 10 yrs is about time for something else to be out.

What about rear projection tvs? They are cheaper and easy to replace the bulb light when starting to wash out the color. LCDs and Plasma cannot be fixed. They have to replace the whole thing. Projections TVs don't look that bad when compared to LCDs or Plasmas.

I don't think I understand your point. LCDs and DLPs use a bulb (lamp) which needs to be replaced anywhere from a year to two years.....and they are expensive. Plasmas have no lamp. So rear projectors are superior because they have a lamp? Brightness over time is no issue with plasmas because the half-brightness is reached around 60K hours. Personally, I don't like the lamps because they are unreliable and PQ does degrade near the end of their life. And from a PQ standpoint, there is no comparison between LCDs and DLPs vs. plasmas. I spent months looking at 'em before getting a plasma. There is no reason these days not to get a plasma if they fit in your price range (and the Pannys are very cheap now). Not to mention that LCD technology is just flat out inferior.....50% of the screen surface is made up of filler which compromises resolution/detail, blacks have been and still are substandard, inferior viewing angles, you have the screen door effect and silk screen effect. Spinach!

I'd say Plasma > DLP > LCD

I can't afford a nice tv but I've sort of been shopping around in case one day I will be able to buy one and a big plasma would be my first choice (if money was no object) followed by a large DLP (they're cheap and still look better than LCD to me) followed by an LCD as long as it's 37" or larger and under $1400.

So Greenwit

Can you Tell me who makes the best Plasmas?
And if there's any 42" plasmas that are a really good deal ?

I don't know too much about them but, I would want my plasma to have, I'm not sure exactly what it's called but it allows you to have multiple diffrent things being viewed on the screen.
Like you can break the screen into like 4 different sections. I only want that feature for my security cameras.

Otherwise, just something with a compatible resolution so I could play some of the newer games out having it hooked up to my computer .

Thanks for your help,

The two makes that are the favorites (which you'll see if you read the AVS boards....and I agree BTW) are Panasonic and Pioneer. They offer superior PQ and are priced very competitively (especially panasonic....you can get a 42 incher for less than $3K). You might be interested in the Panasonic commercial models (TH-42PHD8UK and TH-50PHD8UK) which allow you to do a great deal with picture in picture and have a large number of features. If your serious about getting a plasma you really do need to read up the AVS forums flat panel section. There is so much stuff there that it will be like drinking through a firehose at first but it is necessary research in order for you to get the plasma you need. For example, some argue that the panasonic ED plasmas have a PQ almost identical to the HD plasmas beyond 8 feet or so viewing distance....and EDs are dirt cheap these days. BTW, I have a panasonic th-50px50u....the 500u has more features but same picture.

Great,

By the way, I'm dead serious on getting one. Not today or anything but soon.

You named one that I was looking at too. It just seems cheap for a Plasma. Which I would hope is a good thing. "Not cheaply made".

Link here

One thing I like about it is that it has 1024x768 resolution instead of the lower 853 x 480 other cheap plasmas have.

To me it wouldn't be worth it to buy a plasma without a high resolution.

There's nothing "cheap" about Panasonic plasma's, you're getting a quality set. The PHD8UK models are commercial models which do not come with a tuner or speakers so you are saving some money there. If you have a set top box and a home theater system you don’t need these anyway. Btw you can get the 42" about $200 cheaper at tvauthority.com. I'm not affiliated with them I just came across it from other forums. I wish I could find those kind of prices here in Canada.

i say neither. go DLP. longest life.

If you like to replace a lamp every few years then I guess you can get some long life out of it. Have fun with that. Exactly how long do people expect to keep these sets anyway, 30-50 years? By that time if I'm not able to beam a 100" screen into my brain then we have failed as a technological society.

DLP's are great value if you are the only one in the room looking straight at it. All the DLP sets I've viewed so far have horrendous viewing angles, pretty common among most RPTV's. They make LCD's look good in that area. Also I can occasionally catch the rainbow effect, although I’m aware that most people don't see them. Other then price I have no idea why anyone would buy these sets.

well i got mine for free from samsung. hell the ole tube TV is fine with me. i do not need to see the print of Mike Vic's crotch when he throws a pass. As long as I see the basic, I'm good. I buy a new TV every 5 years at most anyway.

It's a good TV.....you might want to research it further at the AVS forum to make sure you are not surprised by some issue. Owners report every little issue they have with their plasmas there. It is not at all a 'cheap' TV. Panasonic has lowered all their plasma prices the past several months in order to drive out their competition. It seems to be working as Pioneer is discontinuing some plasma lines. Note that the TV uses input blades. The standard ones:

PC Input, Audio Input (for PC), Serial Control (RS-232C) Input, BNC Component Video/RGB Input and Audio Input, BNC Composite Video Input, BNC Composite Video Output, S-Video Input, and Audio Input (for Video). There is an available slot for an optional terminal board. Or, you can remove the standard boards and mount up to three optional boards.

No HDMI.....you might want to add that. I think they cost a couple hundred dollars.

I also got my TV from TVAuthority. They are a good group. If you become a member of AVS you get a 30 day return warranty which includes returning it if you have one bad pixel (happens sometimes). AFAIK, you can't buy this TV at the retail stores (BB, CC, etc.) because it is a commercial TV. Also note that if something goes wrong, I believe you have to bring it into the repair shop yourself. No free pick-up during warranty. Again, 'cause it's commercial. Double check that with whoever you are buying from.

True.... But seeing the look of terror in his eyes as Green Bay sacks him is amazing in HD. (Go Pack!)

I like the size of plasmas better than lcd, but I think the lcd's have a better picture. I still went dlp though for my set, (I'm a glutton for large screens)

yeah yeah yeah he ate the gridiron yesterday but ATL let them have that because Brett Favre is old.

Front projection LCD's are very nice nowadays, but you just have to wait for them to get up there is size in mass production to match the prices of Plasmas. Fujitsu makes the best plasma panels barnone (however they are approx 2x to 3x the price of the panny's).

If you are going for Plasma, the panny commercial lines are the best deals with their interchangeable blades. Iin my opinion take a look at the Sony SXD line. They are I think the only one's that can natively take 1080p signals right now. The rest of them use wobbulation technology to get to 1080p.

Samsung is pretty much the leader in LCD technology (if I'm not confusing that with Plasma). I'd go for a Hitachi Plasma screen, although they are pricey.

Panasonic makes some very sharp Plasmas as well.
