LCD stats really confuse me...

User reviews and stats just never seem to match up well. For example i'm looking at a 500 contrast ratio monitor, yet reviews say the blacks are true black and the whites are true too.

Or a 8ms monitor yet the reviews say lots of ghosting. Are there ANY stats that are meaningful when shopping for an LCD? Or do I have to continue digging through heaps of user reviews for everything?

Also does 16.7 million colors really guarantee that it's 8 bit? How can I be certain?

AHHH!!!!! i've never had so much trouble when shopping for something, LCD's are really pissing me off.

User reviews are unscientific. There are very few people in the world who understand how LCDs work, how to measure their performance correctly, and how to set them up right. As a result, most user reviews are from people who don't know what they're talking about.

Well on some monitors I can't find any reviews at all cept for the ones on newegg. There really needs to be a site dedicated to testing all monitors with true contrast ratios, brightness, and response...

Your closest source of that would be these guys. But they don't review all LCD's, cause quit honestly, there be no way. Tomshardware also does LCD testing but I wouldn't place a bet of dogshit on that biased website.

I know that Maximum PC did a review on a number of monitors a while back, maybe say 4-6 months ago. I would see about going to their site and seeing if you can get an archive of the article.

Toms hardware monitor reviews are some of the best bar none. Behardware is also up there. Beware both of these sites don't pull punches. Don't be surprised when the new fantabulous overdriven display smears.

Hey i don't know if it's the only thing they do right anymore, but if you are basing it on their other reviews give them a second look. An average of the readings across the color spectrum, like tom's graph, should be the true ms rating. That would be the day though. Doesn't lend itself to marketing and misleading people. Add in a nice spacial uniformity test etc.... top shelf folks.

I call a serious bullshit foul on that. But whatever, im not gonna pump the gas to ignite a flamewar. I'll never trust anything Tomshardware has to say.

Toms doesn't have any of the monitors i'm looking at.

When is VESA going to standardize the testing of monitors so these companies don't keep cheating their stats. It's the biggest bullshit

Probably never. Its the same thing with DVD media standards, Blue Ray vs HD-DVD, claims of products on commercials that don't meet the expections, ect..ect..

No one will spend the time/effort/initative to standardize specs and ratings on something that 95% of the consumers that buy don't know/care about. Welcome to free open market consumerism.
