Ignoring the size and price difference between LCD and Plasma displays, which of the two has the better overall image quality?

Should I go and buy an LCD or wait for Plasma to drop in price?
 
Although plasma tends to win in contrast and what would be considered as pixel repsonse time I feel that from my opinion, LCDs look crisper and have better color. My vote is LCD.
 
LCD often has a higher resolution making it better for still images and reading text.

LCD has far worse contrast than plasma because an LCD must block the backlight while in a plasma display each gas bubble is like a little light bulb.

Plasma also has far superior response time. I play widescreen games using my xbox and Panasonic 42" plasma. It is an amazing experience, especially for racing games. Ghosting is a non-issue on plasma.
 
Well it depends what you want to do with it, if you want a tv go with plasma but if you want a computer screen i doubt you want it to be 42 inches? Anyway I suggest Plasma for a tv but a lcd for a computer, much cheaper.
 
I would get an LCD screen, they seem crisper to me.

Plasma's become dimmer over time, i've heard people say that after a few years they are not nearly as bright as they are when you buy them.

That's called a half life son, and every plasma element has one. Most screens it is around 5 years of continuous usage or so, so I guess it depends on your usage. Plasmas also have a lousy response time as well. Image quality depends largely on the manufacturer. A Pioneer Elite 50" Plasma looks worlds different than a shitty Gateway E-DTV plasma for a third of the price. Remember, most plasmas under $4000 aren't HD capable and can't display anything over 480p, so in reality they are useless for most anything. As for resolution, any HD ready set can support 1920x1080, and the only displays I know of that can do 720p are LCD and Plasma displays. If you are hell bent on a flat TV, my money is on the LCD unless you have literally buckets of money to spend. Or you could look at Mitsubishi's wonderful line of Big screens (Silver Plus and up only) for a great picture and great price. As for plasmas dropping in price, well I wouldn't count on it. The industry is all but built on LCD's and if Intel has anything to do with it, LCOS will be the next big thing.

Wrong. I watch 720p and 1080i all the time on my ED 42" Panasonic. Sure it is scaled, but at 42" and a typical viewing distance of 6-8 feet, you won't see the pixels. In fact, many people, my self included, have compared the ED and HD 42" Panasonics side-by-side with a 1080i signal. Amazingly, most people come away prefering the ED Panasonic and its about $1500 less!

No plasma screens are available in this range, they are only 42 inches and more and I don't know the answer if they don't produce them, maybe because it would be too pricey.
 
It depends on what your going to do. TV get a plasma. If you are into gaming then get a LCD. I say this because plasmas have bad issues with burn in. As far as ED vs HD plasmas yes I can see a difference (true 720p screens rock) but hell the ED screens are cheaper and are still great for movies and tv.
 
What swatbat says, TV I would get Plasma and Gaming I would get LCD.
 
If you are going with TV, screw plasma, get DLP, LCD or wait for LCOS screens this fall.

Plasmas are over priced, under performing hunks of fad junk.
 
DLP: rainbows, poor contrast, big cabinet.
LCD: poor contrast, poor blacks, ghosting, too expensive.
LCOS: unproven, big cabinet.

Plasma: beautiful

You just have to do the research so you can find the good brands/models, find a good price, and set it up properly. That's the price of being on the cutting edge.

Burn-in is hardly an issue for plasmas anymore. Plasma technology has been steadily evolving.
